Too many things called X, too confusing. Especially the fact that his 1999 startup is called X. I mean, X1999 is a thing, even before that startup...

I happily don't care about twitter.

About on par with every other decision he's made since he bought it...

How are people supposed to even search for it now? You know and not see 30 pages of very strong images first?

I guess he's burned any value brand recognition might have given the company? This seems pointless and like it will probably do more harm than good, but then that's kind of par for the course.

Ugh, I generally dislike agreeing with rev, but my take on it is especially with Musk getting rid of things like proper account verification, fact checking, and increasing right wing and authoritarian voices compared to other outlets, hes enhanced twitters ability to propagate misinformation and rally certain elements. Its collapse would cut off one more major, well known, avenue for all of that to be disseminated.

The problem with getting rid of problematic things is that it's more likely that they'll be replaced with even worse things in our current environment. Few of our systems are working well to stop bad actors. Does anyone think a more moderate and balanced Twitter option will arise from the ashes if he blows (OK, OK, "when he finishes blowing") it up?

Not really. More simply it's just that he's actually that stupid/deluded. The only reason he's been a success to this point is that his other businesses have a layer of management that specifically keeps Musk from directly managing the company and is able to keep Musk's stupider impulses at bay. Twitter doesn't have that.

I wonder if that Microsoft thing specifically mention "On-line chat room..." and "On-line electronic bulletin boards..." narrows the scope enough to go after Elon. It does specify for talking about video games but I would think them having a claim to something called X being used to send messages and make posts would be pretty strong.

I like changes, especially about things I don't care about. It will take some time but I'll get used to the name "X". People might think: "Remember when it was called Twitter? So old..."

Yeah, it is hard to make an x cool, but it a distopian sci-fi x not even a cool x marks the spot pirate x or something. Like you are going being chugging your soylent and browsing the X while working your 996 at megacorp type of x, not something fun and folksy. Not exactly making me to interested in using the platform

I don't think it's a good idea, but I don't use Twitter so I really don't care.

he's actually been obsessed with X since...1999! He made X.com which eventually merged with Confinity Inc to form Paypal. Although it wasn't Musk that switched it to Paypal - in September 2000, when Musk was in Australia for a honeymoon trip, the X.com board voted for a change of CEO from Musk to Peter Thiel, the co-founder of Confinity. In June 2001, X.com was renamed PayPal.

You wouldn't be able to copyright "X" anywhere, as that's far too short and generic to be considered a copyrightable creative work. Keep in mind that copyright is for things like stories, songs, art, videos, blocks of text, etc.; you can't copyright a title or a name of something.

You can trademark something like that as a brand or company name, but that's different than copyright. It also only applies to whatever medium and industry you purchase the trademark for. For a generic, non-unique name like "X", the fact that there's a rock band in Japan named "X" would not stop a company in a completely different industry (for instance, a restaurant or a bank or, yes, a social media site) from branding themselves "X".

I'm more interested in the various posts claiming that Meta holds the trademark on "X" related to social media, as that would be something that Twitter seems to be directly infringing on.

I read something from someone who claimed to be a former Tesla employee who talked about how Musk had to be managed as the company grew. They talked about how there was an entire layer of management whose entire job, day in and day out, was to keep Musk from doing something stupid and how entire systems of the company were designed to manipulate and deceive him into doing things that were actually beneficial instead of harmful to the company. I have no idea if any of it was true, but it was certainly believable given how badly he's bungled Twitter.

I believe it. It's not uncommon for CEOs/upper management to have visions not based in reality; it's just that, as you wrote, there's normally a level of management whose job is to keep them in check. Twitter doesn't have that, and we all have been witnessing the consequences.
