Yes, incredible movie. 10 / 10

Barbie was good too, but not to the same level IMO

Kind of rambling Letterboxd review as I was driving home and using talk to text:

My brain is completely scrambled so this review may be a little rambling. Part of it is that it is now past midnight but also I think the movie would have just screwed me over no matter what. The movie was extremely long, very talky, very exhaustive, and very difficult to pinpoint exactly how we're supposed to feel about so many aspects of the film. And I think that is exactly the point and why this is going to stand up over time because there are actually things to discuss.

Also, some of the performances are just absolutely amazing, most notably Robert Downey Jr. and Emily Blunt, but Cillian Murphy and Matt Damon are also really good. I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of nominations here. Finally, the cinematography, the production design, the costume design, and most especially the sound and score are absolutely top-notch.

I agree with this but to me it just seemed like Nolan didn't have any idea how Oppenheimer felt outside of historical statements and wasn't willing to put an opinion on screen about it. Which seemed kind of not a viable way to make a biopic. Oppenheimer felt like cardboard the moment he joined the Manhattan project, which where he probably had to stfu about his political views irl and where sources dried up but I am speculating.

I view it as Oppenheimer himself was torn about it. It was a fucked up situation where he didn't really want the US military to have the atomic bomb but if the Nazis had gotten there first, it would have been worse. Of course, the Nazis lost and then it is about Japan and whether it would be ultimately saving lives or not. And also about whether mutual assured destruction could lead to peace. In the context of the time, there were no easy answers. This is why I followed up with what you quoted with, "And I think that is exactly the point and why this is going to stand up over time because there are actually things to discuss."
