You see those lifeboats hanging off the side? Well each of them can hold 450 people:

Tschudi Logistics Group has recently been commissioned to deliver the full logistics setup for the transport of 17 lifeboats that will be installed on the cruise ship. Each lifeboat has the capacity for up to 450 people, measuring a total of 6,715 cubic metres.

Holy crap. I didn't know those lifeboats are that big. Do you think there are lifeboats for that lifeboat?

That probably goes to show just how mindbogglingly big this damn cruise ship is. That's enough lifeboat space for more than 7500 people. Holy shit

It's just a block of calories lol.

Also, why bother with this emergency water, and not just use bottled water:

I assume the bottle takes up space and while on it's own not very heavy, would be quite heavy when dealing with the amount you need for 450.

Bro, imagine being launched off the god damn ship in that tiny boat with 450 people like this:

Also, how do you even get 450 people on there? I feel like you'd be just sitting there waiting while the cruise ship is sinking.

That's basically how emergency rations work. Just meant to keep you alive

Bottled water has an expiration date/plastic constantly leeching into the water. Also less plastic, more space for the water itself

People give crap about the amount of lifeboats the Titanic had, but the Titanic actually had more lifeboats than what was legally required at the time.

But that just shows how terrible the regulations were 100 years ago

One problem with Titanic and lifeboats was that the prevailing thought was they would be used to ferry passengers from the sinking vessel to the rescue vessel and NOT to carry the full compliment of passengers for a prolonged period in wait of rescue.

The other problem was the complete bleepstorm of loading the boats by the officers.

That's not exactly fair. The usage of liners has drastically changed since then. Back in Titanics day, you didn't really have liners serving as a recreational entities. Liners were more akin to what airplanes serve now: a means of getting from point A to point B.

So because all the liners were serving the same purpose, they all more or less followed the same routes, meaning there would be another liner within distance in case a liner needed aid. The idea was if shit hit the fan, another ship would come. Titanic would lower their lifeboats which would ferry passengers to the other ship, while that ship would lower it's lifeboats and send them to Titanic who would fill those and send them back to other ship. The system actually worked pretty well, and there was actually a similar incident with WSL where minimum casualties occurred a year or so before Titanic's sinking.

The issue April 14 was that it was truly a bizarre freak occurrence. First, you have a massive ice berg field in places where bergs were atypical. This was a major issue because Californian wasn't expecting it and realized it was too dangerous to navigate the field. They warned Titanic who dutifully adjusted it's course far more south than typical. So on top of the freak berg field, you get a freak berg itself venturing way south. There is plenty of analysis that had Californian not been trapped it could have made it time to save virtually every passenger.

Of course, hindsight is 20/20 and liners now prepare for the 1 in a million incidents like Titanic.

Well yeah but arrogance and negliance still gets people killed on boats, I watched a whole channel on it.

Like for example in 2014, around 300 high schoolers died on the Ferry Sewol.

This. Which is fucking insane considering any event they would need them likely means the ship sunk which would necessitate enough boats for everyone. Plus the staggering size of the ocean meant how little chance there'd even be another boat in the area to ferry them to.

Like, a loss of power would be the only circumstance where it might be adequate. But I guess they didn't even think it would sink in the first place.

Is it really even necessary to carry a week of emergency food on those things? It is hard to believe a scenario where a modern cruise ship has to be abandoned and lifeboats aren't recovered within the day, let alone an entire week.

I think so.
Imagine if the cruise ship was sailing from New York to the London.
It'll take about a week on average.

If the cruise ship sank in the middle, it could take several days for rescue vessels to reach the boats (and considering the sheer number of passengers on the cruise ship, it's going to take time to organize enough rescue vessels to arrive, too).

Oh, and you'd probably want several gps devices in case one or two fail.

That's not true. All the liners at that time basically followed the same routes. As I mentioned before, Californian was very near Titanic when she sank. Roughly 6 miles and close enough Californian could see Titanic. If it weren't for the ice field, they could have easily made it to Titanic in 30 minutes.

As I mentioned earlier, WSL even had experience with this system a few years prior when Republic was sunk and the only deaths was from the initial piercing by SS Florida. Two other boats were able to respond timely to rescue everyone. It's important to note the North Atlantic Route was essentially the boat version of Interstate 5. It was HEAVILY trafficked and it took an absurd amount of coincidences for Titanic to sink

Wow.
I've heard about another ship in the area who couldn't/didn't reach Titanic, but never realized how close.

I wonder if any passenger/crew took a picture of the ship sinking.

Even if they had cameras, the ability to take night time photos that far was non-existent. Interestingly enough there are pictures of the iceberg suspected to have sank Titanic. A sailor took them unwittingly because he thought it odd that the berg had a large smear of red paint, and had no idea about Titanic

Interestingly enough, the Andrea Doria sinking actually had many the same elements. It collided with Stockholm on a busy route (damn near the exact same spot, in fact) while in a fog bank but took a long time to sink, and in that time all the passengers were able to get into lifeboats to ferry them over to other ships that arrived to help, and the deaths all occurred in the initial collision or later as a result of injuries sustained during the evacuation.

Yeah that's how many the ship holds. I just got done watching Trek Trendy's latest vid where he went on the 'Wonder of the Seas' (currently the largest cruise ship) with 7.5k people. What a crappy generic cruise it looks like tho compared to other brand cruises.
