I think that people have always been able to influence each other. I'm just not so deluded to think thar it only happens because of social media and that if it isn't on the news it didn't happen.

A quick search into this on TikTok immediately has multiple posts talking about how dangerous it is, and these posts have like tens of thousands of likes.

So the common sense influence of NOT to do this is still overwhelmingly high on the app.

Anyways on the actual topic, if you actually look at the comments for many of these dangerous trends, most of them are talking about how stupid the actual people doing it are and many sharing the dangers of them. The issue is that there are certain people/tiktokers who care more about clout and engagement they get online (whether it is love or hate) and are willing to do stupid shit like this to get it. There are more not doing it than there are idiots doing this shit, but the way news spread always seems like the minority are the majority. The only reason I know is because my niece and nephews go out of their way to share this stuff with me since I'm basically babysitting them.

Evel Knievel jumped from 1965 to 1980. During that entire time of 15 years children were emboldened into doing utterly insane nonsense on motorbikes across the globe. By comparison the Tide Pod challenge for less than a year in 2018 and largely did not have world-wide practice.

So no, the Tide Pod challenge was not more widespread nor did it persist longer. It just is more recent and thus recency bias kicks in. For every dumb thing done now there have been a similar dumb thing that happened in every generation. We just have a societal brain rot that assumes that the younger generations somehow do things with more regularity and that whatever new way to communicate is *the* thing that is going to destroy society. We did it with newspapers, we did it with books, we did it with music, we did it with TV, and now we're doing it with the Internet.

People across all generations for as long as humans exist will always have a *lot* of morons. That is a permanent fixture. Period.
