There must be a certain amount of cognitive dissonance at work somewhere, because unconditional support for Israel doesn't appear to be wavering within the GOP and the rightward shift of Netanyahu's latest administration has surely earned their rubber stamp of approval.

I think we just have to accept that the Republican Party isn't a monolith but instead a broad church which manages to shelter a diverse range of bizarre and dubious opinions beneath its roof. It's big enough to accommodate anti-semites as well as pro-Zionists -- as well as those who are willing to sacrifice Holocaust victims as pawns to "win" an "argument" that slavery improved the lives of slaves.

They love Israel because it's an apartheid state engaged in the long slow genocide of the Palestinians. They can hate Jews but still love Israel for killing brown people. Especially since it means the Jews are there and not here.

Again, there's a certain cognitive dissonance at work in that. For decades, pro-Zionist right-wingers triple sugar-coated the myth of the state of Israel as a benevolent liberal democracy, and any criticism levelled against Israeli government policy for its impact on Palestinians would have them sputtering furious denials to protect a glowing reputation that Israel simply did not deserve. There was a resolute, long-standing refusal to recognize any aspects of apartheid in Israeli government policy, or to recognize that any of its victims were unarmed, innocent civilians, or if they were that there was any element of intentionality.

They didn't so much approve of a gradual genocide as vehemently deny (probably even to themselves) that anything of the kind could be conceived of as taking place.
