When I think of small town I think of a rural town which has 0 commercial zoning where you need to drive 30 minutes to a Walmart that the surrounding 6 towns all share.

I'm not going to do the same thing as that song and try to say one or the other is better. I grew up in a small-ish town and now live in a much bigger city because that suits me a lot better. I get though that the city isn't for everyone. If you're happier living in a small town then you're not wrong to live there.

I was 15 minutes away from the grocery store where I also worked when I lived in a small town. Also McDonald's there is apparently open 24 hours. My local McDonald's closes at midnight.
