Yeah I could see it being like Swashbuckler and use a cutlass/saber + pistol combo (since it also looks like his other hand is gripping a pistol)

Make it a job that is kind of like the inverse of Red Mage having a melee phase where it's primarily melee but has a ranged phase

Story screenshot shows Ryne and Zero in the Crystarium
Tribal alliance quests are back. Time to finish grinding those out.
Tataru's Grand Endeavor screenshots were just two random people talking in the Studium
Dungeon takes us to The Lunar Subterrane, jury's officially out on which moon but the screenshot gives "hints"
Trial is Zeromus as expected; title is The Abyssal Fracture
Unreal brings back The Singularity Reactor
Alliance raid tier is named Thaleia
Duty support for the last three MSQ dungeons that didn't have it
Variant/Criterion dungeon is Aloalo Island, again prior variant dungeons not required to unlock. Partner NPC is Matsya AKA my favorite NPC from early EW

Does anyone have tips for a beginner? I've done a lot of quests, and am currently level 30 (Summoner), but it feels like the combat is just using the same two to three spells over and over, and other quests are just 'go talk to X. Now go talk to Y. Now talk to Z! Here's your reward."

uhhhh... yeah, so... the game is kind of just... like that. it's not going to change. most jobs will start to feel somewhat engaging around level 60 or so, but summoner is the easiest and simplest job in the game and won't change at all until level 86 and even then, only barely.

yeah Summoner is the easiest DPS job in the game to play and it sounds like you might like something more engaging. I'd recommend a melee for that, personally.

But either way, if you're doing side quests that aren't labeled with a + on them, don't bother. Ones that are blue with a + sign are to unlock things (dungeons, game features, etc) so you should do those but otherwise just focus on the main story.

As said, most jobs don't really get complex or involved until around level 60, however.

What Dels says, basically. Arcanist is an awful job to begin with, unfortunately, but has the upside of also leveling Scholar at the same time. If it bores you, try and teach yourself that.

As for questing and leveling, work on the Main Story Quest until you can't to give yourself some world building. It's a very slow boil to start. When you are able, head to the other main cities and grab each of the other jobs - they all level quicker since you gain boosts to every job that isn't your highest. With a caveat for early levels.

Job overviews:
Thaumaturge to Blackmage - extremely slow leveling alone. Dungeons are a lesson in keeping up with a party.
Conjurer to Whitemage - teaches you the basics of dealing damage while healing - though you have Scholar already available for that through Arcanist. You do not always need to be spamming Cure on your tank, and this makes fights take longer.
Archer to Bard - teaches you the basics of moving during fights to keep out of avoidable damage. You also gain access to damage-over-time and area-of-effect abilities early, but your damage is low in comparison to other classes.
Pugilist to Monk - teaches you the basics of combos and repositioning very early, but almost entirely lacks ranged damage.
Lancer to Dragoon - also teaches combos but also maintaining buffs early, but lacks good area of effect damage until later.
Rogue to Ninja - teaches repositioning early, and also juggles buff and debuff uptime. Deals kinda bad damage alone early unless you spam True North all the time.
Marauder to Warrior - teaches you how to tank by going all out on your damage. Kind of sucks in the self-sustain department early, though.
Gladiator to Paladin - see Marauder, except it trades damage for durability. Their personal damage is awful, but they should never die until later.
Arcanist to Scholar - you already have Summoner, so you get to try this option out. Scholar will teach you how to "weave" healing/buff off-global cooldowns between spellcasts much earlier than Whitemage does, and your Faerie allows you to ignore incidental damage if your tank is pulling a normal amount.

Possibly give crafting or gathering a try also. Variance is what keeps the game fresh, and the start isnt terribly interesting until you start getting to the big fights. If you want to make them really challenging, too, you can advertise on Party Finder or Novice Network for "minimum item level" and queue with an arranged party like that so you get a feel for how bigger fights (called Trials, to start) are supposed to play out.
Speaking from the POV of a decent NoviceNet, though. Mateus has a bad rep but our NN is very welcoming, which is bizarre for something Balmung-adjacent.

If you want a more "engaging" DPS, you could try Monk or Black Mage (which start as Pugilist and Thaumaturge respectively). IMO Monk in particular has more things you have to remember during combat earlier during leveling, nowadays

99.9% of the time, you should put off yellow exclamation point quests basically forever. The rewards are insignificant, and most of them, especially until you get into later expansions, have barely any story as well. Stick to the meteor symbol quests (the main story quest, aka MSQ) and the blue quests with a + sign (which unlock things)

Other tips... read the dialogue, try to learn who the characters are, remember who you like and don't like, etc

^ not a bad idea. right off the bad, red mage has more of a "flow" to its combat compared to summoner. it's still simple but it's fun.

Red Mage is a very engaging class!

As is Samurai, which unlocks at the same level, and is the job I main right now. Easily the best job grouping of any expansion.

Definitely don't go grind out a level 1 job right now.

Hey guys - I'm getting back into it after stopping roughly at the end of Shadowbringers 5.0. Anyone mind filling me in on the major quests/events that are available? My current list is:

Nier raids (finished 2/3)
WEAPON raid chain (finished 2/3 as well)
New Classes if I feel like it
Class Quests? Are these still a thing?
Shadowbringers 5.1 and beyond
And of course, all of Endwalker

I dont understand the "filling you in" part. Like, story spoilers? What the trials are? About the only thing I can spoil about "class quests" is in Shadowbringers and later they become role quests instead (i.e. Black Mage and Redmage share a story.) 4 in ShB, 5 in EW. The Endwalker ones dont unlock until a certain point in the story (you'll know it when you get there.)

For trials in Endwalker, you've got Drama Queen, Mommy, Weaponized nihilism, Barbie Kong, hot thighs, and DRK/DRG.

For raids, you've got Castlevania wing with a Belmont, prototype Phoenix, prototype chimera, and Dracula. You've got a Resident Evil wing with a carnivorous poison Hunter, a possessed Jill Valentine, Plant 42, and genderswapped Alexia Ashford. Lastly, you've got the Bayonetta wing with... uh... I dont know Bayonetta, but you have a faceless demon that borrows from the dead, a castle turned spider demon, best boy at the height of his power, and a seraph with a banger of a theme song.

For alliance raids, this one was in the prerelease for endwalker. You're fighting the Twelve. For reasons.
