It's not like he was planning to shoot him from the beginning.

If he wasn't planning to shoot, he never should have had his gun out.

Exactly.

This is the type of situation that allowed George Zimmerman to get away with stalking and executing Trayvon Martin, only from all the evidence, Martin was merely walking around the neighborhood eating candy and talking on the phone to a girl like a normal teenage boy.

I'm generally opposed to vigilante "justice" because it's hard to get testimony from the deceased. Then to get a nice sympathetic "law and order" judge and jury isn't that hard in a state like Texas.

Again... if the dead guy did steal it AND pulled his gun first, I think the truck owner did nothing wrong. I just want the authorities to investigate it and verify he wasn't lying before I determine his innocence.
Just making sure that was clear, b/c it seemed like you were against his actions, even if it went down that way.

Zimmerman clearly was in the wrong. Trayvon did nothing wrong and was being stalked by a psycho racist w/ a gun. He stood his ground, got murdered for it, and the state let the murderer walk.
Trayvon and this situation are nothing alike.
Trayvon committed no crimes, let alone stealing directly from Zimmerman.
Trayvon wasn't armed with a lethal weapon, but his assailant was.
Zimmerman had no fucking justification for anything he did, and even had the authorities on the phone telling him to back the fuck off.

The thief stole the truck and caused the initial confrontation.

The confrontation didn't begin until the owner went vigilante and began threatening people's loves over a truck.

owner was forced to fire his gun in self defense

The owner pointed his gun first. How is it self-defense when you're the one with the weapon in hand threatening someone?

This also depends. Did he confront the guy threatening to kill him or with physical violence for stealing his truck? Did the thief act in self preservation? How reliable is the man's testimony? How reliable will police be if they are sympathetic to this kind of vigilante gun justice?

George Zimmerman got off for the execution of Trayvon Martin because he claimed Martin was trying to take the gun away. It's pretty fucked up how far "2nd amendment" advocates will go to burn the rest of the constitution so they can have their wild west fantasy.

I clearly noted that Martin was just being a normal teenage boy and that this man on the other hand did steal a truck, so don't moralize when I've already been very clear about that.

These situations are alike in one way because you have a so-called vigilante acting with what they thought were justified reasons to shoot to kill.

In this case, the vigilante didn't shoot until he was being shot at (again, if his claims are true). Using lethal force to defend against lethal force is completely justified. Mind you, I don't own guns and want gun control measures passed. But expecting someone literally being shot at to not shoot back is ridiculous.
Also again...was the vigilantism right in the first place? actually fucking matters a lot. If this guy did steal his truck, I'm fine w/ him pursuing after him. He was actually wronged and responded in a reasonable way. (again, the shooting came after, supposedly b/c the thief escalated it)

Zimmerman was dead fucking wrong; Trayvon never committed any crimes in the first place. And HE is the one to shoot first against the other person.
So no, I don't think the cases have any relevant cross-over at all, unless it turns out the truck owner lied.

He didnt use lethal force to recover stolen property. He found his truck being stolen and performed a citizens arrest and called police, which is well within his legal right.

The thief then pulled a gun an attempt to shoot and was shot in kind.

...You can pull your gun out without intending to shoot. The rule of thumb is that you don't put your finger on the trigger unless you're going to shoot. There are tons and tons of incidents of both police and ordinary citizens drawing their guns as a deterrence/control measure without ever intending to shoot--but of course if the need arises, they are able to shoot quickly.

I don't know where this "never draw a gun unless you're definitely going to shoot someone with it" concept came from, but it's faulty.
