Maybe if they stocked cashiers instead of the self-checkouts in an effort to save money, they wouldn't have to rely on eagle-eyed associates to step in the line of loss prevention duty. I feel bad but at the same time I don't exactly want to walk back inside and be like 'I technically stole this can I pay for it?'. Anyway, yes, it's extremely easy to steal at a wal-mart based on the fact that I accidentally stole some things and not even the reciept checkers notice. I used to work as a cashier at Walmart. I think I let more free stuff go actually working a lane and forgetting that the customer had stuff on the bottom rack of the cart than I did when overseeing the self-checkouts. They aren't that hard to monitor and if someone starts being shady then you just walk over and ask if they need any help. They panick and then give a "oh I'm having trouble getting this item to scan" excuse. I can't imagine you could find an insurance company who'd cover inventory shrinkage, like it's a natural part of doing retail business so there is no way an insurance company could make money on it. Not that Walmart cares about the employee, but it's an order of magnitude more expensive. You're able to get in and get out without ever having to wait (if you do, it's short because self-checkouts move fast). Despite that, no one is rushed and everyone bags at their own pace because there are 59 other checkouts. It's better this way. Cashier positions should be converted into security ones ...
