If theyre physically trying to run out the store yes. For not scanning items, this is perfectly acceptable.

I've been wondering about the scanning thing. There's maybe 1 attendant to like 12 self-check outs and I've never had anyone actually come over or observe me. It seems like it would be so easy to steal.

Maybe if they stocked cashiers instead of the self-checkouts in an effort to save money, they wouldn't have to rely on eagle-eyed associates to step in the line of loss prevention duty.

Also, buddy went way overboard there. No, you're not getting $318 worth of free product.

I've accidentally stolen things like water bottles when I stuck them under the cart, or one time a box of cheerios.

I feel bad but at the same time I don't exactly want to walk back inside and be like 'I technically stole this can I pay for it?'.

Anyway, yes, it's extremely easy to steal at a wal-mart based on the fact that I accidentally stole some things and not even the reciept checkers notice. I'm the only one who does when I get get to the car lmao.

I dunno about everywhere, and I never like stealing... But, I've literally watched the price of bread double over like three months here. Shit is ridiculous. I can absolutely understand stealing to feed people in these times.

love the people applauding this while Walmart uses their tax dollars to pad their bottom line. $318 is pennies compared to the amount of social assistance we give to subsidize Walmart employees who dont make enough to live.

I used to work as a cashier at Walmart. I think I let more free stuff go actually working a lane and forgetting that the customer had stuff on the bottom rack of the cart than I did when overseeing the self-checkouts. They aren't that hard to monitor and if someone starts being shady then you just walk over and ask if they need any help. They panick and then give a "oh I'm having trouble getting this item to scan" excuse.

Of course they in no way paid me enough to actually care and I sure as shit wasn't going to actually stop people who pushed back.

Oh, I understand that completely. Loblaws Inc is seeing record revenue margins, but is passing the blame on to their suppliers. It's a failure in the global supply chain to be sure.

I don't know. I can't imagine you could find an insurance company who'd cover inventory shrinkage, like it's a natural part of doing retail business so there is no way an insurance company could make money on it. Besides shrinkage is built into their budget.

They probably have some protection against extraordinary product loss though.

Yeah, losing a few bucks worth of merchandise is much preferable to a employee getting hurt (or worse) in a violent customer interaction because they tried to actively stop a perceived theft. Not that Walmart cares about the employee, but it's an order of magnitude more expensive.

Also if the employee tried to stop a theft and there was no actual theft happening, that's potentially a different type of expensive scandal.

There are more associates at self-checks then were regular cashiers. Self-check outs are better.

The people stealing often get aggressive. They can and will use lethal force. I'm AP and I wouldn't chase someone. Not worth dying for this company.

Eh, that's pretty much the same thing as a "greeter".
Not gonna shit on that.
It's not a skilled or demanding jobs, but it's a job to give employment to those who otherwise would be jobless.

Granted, it's a PR thing, but it works out for the people getting employed.

Yeah, I've even had it happen to me by accident before, where I got home and found a pack of mystery gum in my bag. I guess the bag was either near a candy display and it fell in or a previous customer accidentally dropped it in the wrong bag or something .

A bunch of overpaid executives ran the numbers and concluded the increase shrinkage from having one cashier monitor a dozen self checkouts was preferable to paying enough employees to run the checkouts.

costs 8-16$ per hour on average for each additional checker (pay dependent on what walmart gives for wages).

i prefer using a staffed checkstand. it's faster
self checkout is better if have less than 1-3 bags worth of grocery's (mine comes out to more than 7 on average) i buy alot.

Sorry but... ever since my local Walmart got rid of the zombie slow-ass cashiers and turned the 15 or so assisted checkout lines into over 60 self-checkout lines, the shopping experience got 10x better.

You're able to get in and get out without ever having to wait (if you do, it's short because self-checkouts move fast). Despite that, no one is rushed and everyone bags at their own pace because there are 59 other checkouts. It's better this way. Cashier positions should be converted into security ones

Let theft go fuck Walmarts bottom line. They fire people for trying to unionize or out shutdown stores.
