It really wouldn't be progressive. It would be more of a drag queen joke. Maybe they thought about it and backed off from it for that very reason.

The show had a couple of gay jokes. One episode had Will get a job working for a soap opera only to find out that his character was gay. Will's fiance also admitted that she thought Shaft was gay. There's no follow-up on it. She doesn't argue her case by saying that he comes across as someone who tries to hide his sexuality by being hyper-sexual with women. She just flat out says it like she said that Shaft was lame.

It's certainly not as bad as some 90s shows, but I could see them pulling a joke like that.

I remember that being exactly her point, she definitely wasn't using gay as a synonym for lame.

I mean, it's like when people bring up the Seinfeld episode about the writer thinking Jerry and George are gay as being offensive. The jokes are more often about how crazy it is that characters will try so hard to seem masculine and worry about being gay than disliking gay people.

Like George obsessing about whether or not his penis twitched when a male masseuse rubbed his thigh. It's poking fun at hypermasculine bullshit. It's basically the same joke people make now about guys not wanting to wash their ass because touching their own butt is gay.

This was a common theme back then, for male actors to play a female relative of their own character who is supposed to be unattractive. Family Matters also did it.

I just watched that episode a few days ago. There was no context or follow up. She says that she watched Shaft in Africa nine times because Will wanted to, then says that she thinks Shaft is gay. If she meant it like he was hiding his sexuality, she didn't elaborate.

Also, the episode that I just finished had Will pretending to be Hilary's hair designer Deonte.

Jaleel White had a lot of range to play a nerdy, unattractive guy and a nerdy, unattractive girl. I feel kinda bad for him when he tried to move on from that show and play someone closer to who he was in real life. All anybody wanted was Urkel.
