In some of these games, once you move to the next level after the cap, the game freaks out and either kills you instantly or puts you in a garbled mess of a level that is unwinnable. Pacman is the other notable title with a killscreen. Pac man runs out of memory, but in DK it's caused by a glitch that they never found during testing. The rom can easily be patched (or u can even hex edit 1 or 2 lines of code yourself) to go on forever. But the game never gets harder after level 4 (completed on board 13 or 14, so then it's the same thing for 100 boards, takes several hours, and so everyone likes the kill screen.
