It's truly alarming just how badly Musk wishes to control global communications, and what people can and cannot be allowed to see and say.

I would support the federal government seizing starlink in the name of national security. But it won't be successful in the long run Musk is an idiot and like all his ideas it will eventually fail.

The sooner people realize social media wholly unnecessary, the better. Musk is certainly a step towards that. The only pro to it is either as an advertisement platform, or being too lazy to check out an actual news website.

Eh, I've been using Twitter primarily as a way to get news about federal trials that pretty much never allow the media to record things. A number of reporters in Washington, DC have been posting details as they happen in the January 6th trials.

Social media is a good thing. We're having some growing pains right now because people who were very sheltered their entire lives now have a window into the entire world and the range of cultural differences can scare more conservative minds. Like everything else with constant exposure these things will be normalised and eventually people will just gtf over it and mellow tf out.

Blame the people who can't help themselves but to put Twitter (X) on a pedestal.

The people that claim to hate what Musk is doing but continue to use his platform is why Musk has the power he has with the platform. Same to those who run around claiming Twitter is news and promoting the world needs it but also claim to dislike Musk.

You have some who even instead of posting the source material, they will post a tweet that literally has the source link inside the tweet.

Waaaay too many think Twitter is the ultimate or great source of news and will happily regurgitate whatever they saw on Twitter.

So
A) You trust the news source that's making that claim?
B) Do you have a link to "rules are more lenient"? You said previous ones "censored and controlled", which is pretty large claim, a link showing as such seems pretty important.

The goal was to disrupt monopolies, not necessarily to expand nationwide. Incumbent companies tried to block it, but are being forced to be more competitive.

Oh no, I understand. I just don't care. IRC, AIM, MySpace, FaceBook(sorta? Not really though), all fell with very little actual impact to the Internet. Twitter falling would be a similar impact of "OH NO! ... Anyways" as people just piled on to the next thing with some scattering for a while. If I'm being honest I don't care about the impact on advertisement and business, but I understand it. It would likely follow something similar.

I do understand. Workplace communications, community outreach, government offices, police departments, news outlets both independent and not, the applications of Twitter are almost literally endless in the modern world. And also completely inconsequential. It's comfortable, and old, like a home on the web where you can talk to the world in the blink of an eye. Not to mention all the numbers application tie ins that I would likely die of old age trying to list before I got anywhere. But it can all be summed up with one word: Twitter does information.

All shit that has been done by every titan of the Internet, each time bigger. If it vanished tomorrow there would be chaos for a month or so and everyone would settle in to the next big thing.

Saying "Twitter can be replaced by Twitter" is not nearly as clever as you think it is when there's no Twitter.

People have been attempting to build up other apps for the same purpose and it has all failed because it's really hard to get people to adopt a new service when everything is precarious. Elon took one of the most effective tools to disseminate information and destroyed it to promote right-wing fascism. That's actually very bad.
