The first part of his social transition has been going by a different name (in fact, he started using a new name at school before he asked us to use it at home). He's now going to make it official with the government. While it isn't necessarily a difficult process, it does require some planning. There is a specific order you need to do things in order to get a new driver's license, birth certificate, SS card, etc. Surprisingly, Ohio doesn't throw up any walls to change things. The professor asked him the origin of it, and the guy nonchalantly said that he went to file to change his last name, and couldn't think of anything so he just made up the name on the spot.
