XII all the way, especially if it's zodiac age

Can't in good faith recommend you play any of them...

XIII is probably my favorite of those, but voted XII because of Zodiac Age. Haven't played it, but it sounds intriguing at least.

I just downloaded everything for 15, if that wins or you decide to play it, I'll play it too instead of resuming 7R.

XII only because the Zodiac Age is a big enough improvement that you might enjoy it whereas XIII and XV will still be the same games you didn't like last time you tried them

to be fair, ff15 royal edition fixes a lot

I picked 12, but 15 is decent enough too. If these games werent called final fantasy people would probably have been warmer on them

Stay away from 13.

Never played XV, but XIII easily gets my vote over XII. No gameplay changes can save that boring cast and story

nobody cares about ff12s story though. You play 5, 12, and x-2 for the gameplay

I dunno about you, but I largely play RPGs for the story and characters and 12s way too boring for both of those. No gameplay improvements could possibly make me play it again

XIII is easily the best of those 3. Give that another run.

I played the base games for each m of these when they each came out, and did not like either of them. Granted, I kept wanting every new FF to be like VI through X and dont feel I gave any of these an honest chance.

I hate to break this to you, but your instincts were right the first time. That said, if you have to play one, play XII.

Honestly TC should just do 14. Better than all three of these, and the only modern FF worthy of the 4-10 era

I'd go with either XII or XV since they both had changes from the base game, while XIII is the same as it always was.

XIII is the best of these. Zodiac has enough cool improvements that it pulled me through to finish the game for the first time, but the back half of the game is literally worthless. XIII has a shit story but it has pretty fun combat, certainly moreso than XII. And while the story is bad, at least it continues to have one for the whole game, more than you can say for XII.

XV is a 1/10 pile of trash.

All of this games are jokes compared to XIV which is the one you should actually play. Especially since they're expanding the free trial to cover all the way to Stormblood next update.

Oh no it sucked is but I mean it HAD cutscenes. An ATTEMPT was made.

XII at some point just started chaining zones together until you reach the final city.

Zodiac Age is easily the best of these three.

15 Royal is serviceable.

13 is straight up a 1/10 dumpster fire

I will give XIII that it had cutscenes up through chapter 10

Playing XIII gets you to the vastly superior XIII-2 for what it's worth.

XV is probably my favorite of these even if it's absolutely riddled with massive flaws and just barely skirts by being literally unfinished. The stuff that's good in there is really good!

I'm totally fine with acknowledging XIII cutscenes up until Hope Alexander scene

but that's the point where engagement with story side of XIII falls off the face of a cliff until it's Orphan ending time

Going to Pulse was a mistake

That was when I realized that Square had painted themselves into a corner and didn't know how to get out of it

Also the answer for me is FFXV, but I haven't played the Zodiac version of XII. XV's has very obvious issues, but it has some really awesome moments, too.

12's gameplay is good with the Zodiac Age improvements. Story is still not the best but its fine.

13 is... eh all around. Not bad, not good.

15 is just bad.

Can 14 be played single player?

Not going to say XII's storyline is golden or anything, but it's laughable to lament it being that poor either. I've seen some of the things the people who are giving XII a hard time think are good, and yeah... not sure if some people ought to be judging how deep a storyline is.

Genny and I purchased Zodiac Age along with XVI. Once that's done I'm sure we'll be playing it as well.

Almost entirely, yeah. The whole story and all dungeons can be done solo. Sometimes you have to party up for a boss fight though, you just select it from the menu and it automatically pairs you with 7 other people with a few minutes of waiting. (And once you're in, you don't need to do any talking or coordinating, you just fight the boss)

XII has some great characters. It does not have a great story. If you're okay with that compromise, you can enjoy the game.

As long as you play a DPS you can go the entire game without talking to a single human being, even the parts where you're playing with them.

A large chunk of the content in the free trial will also have the option to play with NPCs, if you don't mind taking things slow.

To add to what people have said, honestly if you do play ff14, just play with people. The main story is considered the easiest content, the entire game is considered a more casual experience compared to other mmos, and the community is so wholesome and supportive, they wont even care if you suck. And having a team of people working together to take down a boss really feels cool as shit, and you wont get that feeling with npcs

I like NPC runs first because playing with people nobody actually wants to explore the full dungeons, it's just about blitzing through

I started another character recently and already just from Sastasha I'm like oh hey there's actually more rooms than just the captain's room

Also tbh in all this time i never actually understood the most basic of basic dungeon puzzles like I somehow never even realized there was a captain's key on the floor you had to pick up before opening his room, or how you know which of the coloured corals you interact with. There's just always been somebody else doing what needs to be done so many small things you never actually personally learn until you do an NPC run.

so yeah NPC first but then yeah after that just play with people because it's much faster

That's only really an ARR issue since they just...tossed things like that moving forward, lol. Hell, they even updated a bunch of ARR itself to revamp and get rid of the winding corridors and "obtuse" puzzles.
