Thomas Hemmingway, 31, was arrested and charged with animal cruelty on Monday after fatally stabbing the dog last month, according to Syracuse Police. Hemmingway previously told officers that he had stabbed the black and white female pitbull in self-defense, claiming that the dog had bitten him on his right leg. But the Animal Cruelty Division investigated the attack further - and unearthed new surveillance footage that proved the dog had not attacked Hemmingway. He also had no injuries on his leg where he claimed to have been bitten. Syracuse Police Department posted images of Hemmingway carrying out the violent attack on the innocent animal on Facebook, causing outrage among the community. The Facebook post described how Hemmingway walked along the sidewalk towards the dog and its owner, who has not been identified, and who was walking it on a leash. At some point, the owner let go of the leash and Hemmingway is seen approaching the dog with a large butcher's knife in his hand. He is pictured sporting a black shirt, jeans and sneakers, carrying a backpack while holding the sharp weapon in his hand. In a second image, Hemmingway is seen with the large butcher's knife raised over his head and aimed at the pitbull. Hemmingway is currently being held in the Onondaga County Justice Center. After it was determined by the Animal Cruelty Division that Hemmingway did not stab the dog in self defense, police arrested him for Aggravated Animal Cruelty, an unclassified felony.
