Vice City was probably my favorite of them all, but its been forever. Do the older ones like 3, VC, and SA still hold up?

3 and VC don't hold up

The old ones can be clunky in ways, but I think the pros outweigh the cons a lot. Go with Vince City since it's your favorite. It's mine too.

San Andreas is as far back as I'd tell you to go.

Was IV bad? I played it but honestly I dont remember a thing about it.

I replayed the non-definitive trilogy a couple years ago and they held up fine for me, but I played them when they originally came out too so I guess that's a factor. 3 and VC are definitely rougher around the edges but if you played them before I don't think it'd be difficult to play through them again. Start with VC!

San Andreas if its the OG version and not the remastered trash

Vice City, simply because it has the best soundtrack.

I went back and played GTA3 after 20 years. Its clunky but Im amazed how much of the map I still have memorized and the locations of certain things.

I adjusted very quickly to the driving physics, although I think it's because I unconsciously applied my skills from Gran Turismo into how I drove.

4 is great. Yeah the driving sucks but I love the atmosphere, the story, the physics, the characters, etc

I adjusted quickly too, that doesn't mean I liked them though.

It constantly felt like I was driving in pouring rain.

4 is flawed, but the story, characters, setting, and atmosphere top the rest. I think it's the most immersive of the games. You really feel like you're a part of this criminal underworld that's connected in various ways. The world building was top notch. I also got used to the driving. You almost have to treat it like you're driving a sim game (with wet tracks) with the hand brake as the regular brakes. It shouldn't be that way, but it's not as horrible as people make it out to be. The map is small and condensed and a lot of it is grid-like so there's going to be tons of braking around sharp turns.

The driving and the friends calling you are the two biggest complaints about it, but neither are nearly as bad as people make them out to be.

Most definitely. I love the small things like peds running and covering up when it's raining. The small details help make the world feel real.

The car handling in IV is terrible.

If youre on PC, download the DEP mod for San Andreas and Vice City. Its the real definitive edition.
