From games alone, it's clear they eat Pokemon.

I mean, beyond the Pokedex entries that also clearly state it.

I'm not convinced they fully understand human language. They understand the names of their attacks. Dogs and cats can do that too they're called tricks.

This again depends on whether you're basing it on the anime or the games, but in the anime they definitely understand more than just the names of attacks. Even just in the context of battles, they understand precise details being given to them on how and where to use their attacks or how they should dodge.

And even if they don't fully understand human language specifically, they still are fully capable of talking to each other in Pokemon language. Just watching the episode where they're stranded on the island of giant robots is enough to know they're sapient creatures.

But yes, I don't think the games go as far in terms of making them as intelligent.

My dog uses flatter every day on me when I'm eating dinner

It's not very effective...

dogs can be trained to understand human emotions and human health (emotional support animals, medical service animals)

there's nothing to me that suggests most Pokemon (besides alakazam, mewtwo, etc.) are any smarter than dogs

but i don't think anyone is suggesting alakazam should be eaten

I mean to be fair most of us don't eat dogs either and probably certain Pokmon wouldn't be eaten for the same kinda reason-- nothing to do with intelligence or wisdom and everything to do with pet status. But the ones that aren't as common as pets and were edible would absolutely be eaten.

My umbrage is with the idea that Pokmon are substantially more intelligent than more intelligent animals and yeah I just don't think so

A cat or dog is probably smarter than a pidgey. A dolphin is probably smarter than a Seaking. A chimpanzee is probably smarter than an Infernape. Bears are probably smarter than Ursarings.

Pigs are often considered to be more intelligent than dogs yet there's no taboo outside of religious ones on eating them. Not eating dogs and cats is more about their roles in our lives, that we decided they'd fill. Well, I also believe they'd probably taste awful considering the diets they have as mostly carnivores.

Also, in China, some people eat dogs.

Would never happen, but I'd want to see a horrifying Pokemon villain who eats Pokemon and he/she/they is/are treated as messed up for eating sapient beings.

If I were, as my current self, plucked into the Pokemon world or had Pokemon suddenly appear here, then no, I would not.

If I were from the Pokemon world then I would.

I've played around with vegetarianism enough to know I could handle it should the wealth of the world's meat sources suddenly turn into animals I'd have the capacity to train like a dog.
