tekken 7 does not need to be 81 gigabytes, that is programmers being inefficient

danganronpa v3 is a visual novel and it's 22 gigabytes

even cuphead is 4 gb

it's like they just go "oh welll storage space is cheap and download space is fast, this is fine"

i don't want to have to keep deleting and redownloading games this is dumb. remember when a BIG n64 game was 32 megabytes? banjo kazooie was 16 megabytes. this sucks let's RETVRN

I've noticed a lot of western developers are just terrible at compressing their games to a reasonable amount. It's really strange. I don't know why that isn't more of a priority now.

I asked my brother who plays that game a fuckton and he said that all the DLC maps have redundant files for everything they reuse from the base game, so you end up with like seven copies of all the dodo models/files, each plant, cloud, etc

Anyways, it makes sense that file sizes keep increasing. SNES games were 8x as big as NES games, PS1 games were 100x as big as SNES games, PS2 5x as big as PS1, PS3 5x as big as PS2, PS4 5x as big as PS3. No surprise PS5 is over twice as big as PS4.

I have slow internet and this stuff annoys me too. As Dusk Falls, a storyboard-style narrative adventure game, is over 50 GB for some reason and as a result I've never bothered to download it.

Hey now, pre-downloading tomorrow's big patch for Genshin was only 60 GB. That's not so bad...for part of the game...the new part...just the new part...for the PC version of a mobile game.

Danganronpa V3 is only around 3GB on Vita, which is still high, but proves that they're really not trying at all with game size.

A good thing about current gen is you still have 2GB or less games a lot of the time, but more storage space overall.

Actually for most games that have both PS4 and PS5 versions the PS5 version is the slightly smaller one.

Here's the thing

If a game is compressed it's on the hardware of the user to uncompress it in real time for a good gameplay experience. As games have gotten more graphically complex the amount of things that a gpu has to render has gone up. So companies can choose to have games take less space or reduce the hardware requirements to run them. And they will almost always choose the later.

Yeah, it's more about time-frame of the game's release, like how God of War Ragnarok is much bigger than God of War 2018, and Forbidden West is much bigger than the first Horizon (even though those sequels are cross-gen). I won't be surprised if we have a 200GB single-player game at launch by 2027. Jedi Survivor is currently the biggest I think, at 148GB?
