it just dawned on me that theyre not learning just about radio communications

theyre probably learning about, like, how to communicate information in general

and like there are professors that study that topic

are they just all learning how to manipulate other people or is that a really cynical conclusion to jump to

No, I don't think it's like, "how to work in sales" but when I took a course on it, it seemed like a rather niche subset of humanities to require everyone to have a semester of. It was primarily an intro to the social science of communications.

I took one semester in it for gen Ed, and I remember it being mostly just how to give a speech.

I had a class called Public Speaking that was that.

My mom took Journalism which is under the Communication Department in her uni. She went on to be a magazine reporter and editor.

I've got one! BA in Communications with a journalism emphasis. Was a reporter at the biggest regional newspaper for a little over 5 years but I've moved into public relations work now, which is a pretty common path for journalists.
