She shouldn't be. I don't get why they pushed her for reelection.

But now that that's done, it won't change because she's a vote on the Judicial committee and Republicans aren't gonna let them replace her

And Graham may try to prevent anyone currently in the senate from filling her committee seat. Definitely can't until she resigns according to Senate rules.

I was about to agree with this, but then I started to wonder what other political positions other than the Supreme Court are ones where the death of the politician would likely lead a Republican replacement. When another party member is in line to take over when the unfortunate happens, there's less likely to be political chaos like the overturning of Roe v. Wade and other far-reaching cases. There are also still drawbacks though obviously. Losing a well-loved Democratic governor in a reddish state can really suck ass for people stuck living in that state. That's the situation in Missouri, but actually it's because our last decent governor decided not to run anymore, so it may go to show the irrelevance of issue if anything.

Still, seeing old Democrat senators clinging to life is really concerning for the national political stage. On the other hand, I think age is getting way overblown lately and the "anyone under 80" people are really starting to annoy me, as if Obama wasn't just about a decade ago.

Thank you for being the one person who replied to me that actually got my point. Obviously it's not a 1:1 comparison between Feinstein and RBG, and I don't necessarily blame RBG for being optimistic that her health could improve and she could hold out a few more years. Still, now we have copious benefit of hindsight as to just how badly things can go in these types of situations, and why it's imperative for elder political figures to recognize when it's time to bow out.

I don't expect this kind of self-awareness out of Feinstein's generation, but hopefully the following generations - who have firsthand experience with the struggles of elderly loved ones and colleagues refusing to accept the hard realities of cognitive decline - will be more responsible about it.

No they don't.

Repubs have stated they won't allow anybody to replace Feinstein under the pretense of "Dems just want her gone because she's old, noticeably sickly/not all there and holding up their judicial nominees", but in actuality they'd try and have her not replaced at all, even if she left Congress of her own volition.
