It's actually kind of shocking just how pathetic DeSantis' whole campaign has been.

He was widely considered the front runner to replace Trump since like, two weeks after Trump left office, and from the second we actually had to take that seriously he's just been crashing harder and harder.

Irony posted...
I'm convinced he's only running to make Trump look good to conservatives

I'm like, 60% sure that the entire republican primary is just to flood the whole field with garbage so Trump can run them down and try to recover the momentum he had in 2015.

He was always an overrated candidate for a national election. Appealing to Florida is not the same as appealing to a nation. This isn't the same Florida from even 10 years ago.

He's right where his ceiling is. A state-wide official.

This is obviously right, but I don't really understand why his numbers are crashing. He's the same exact person he's been for years. Just lacking charisma? His florida issues don't translate well outside florida?

He's also veering even further right than Trump on policy, which is killing his chances at broader appeal. Policies he thinks he can defend with the same blind whiny stubbornness as Trump, yet without an ounce of charisma to sell them.

DeSatan is clearly imploding, not hard to see why.

Christie gaining is interesting in some ways, but I find people like to think of him as a big joke so that appeal is likely fleeting if you ask me.

Christie is the one that really concerns me. Everybody else is pretty much sucking Trump and his crimes off, however Christie is the only one who speaks truthfully on it in interviews and in general he just gives a very factual analysis of the situation.

It unfortunately helps him rehabilitate his past of being a Trump worshipper, who helped him prepped for debates, that is now scorned because he didn't get a position in the admin (I think he was vying for AG).

But of the candidates, Christie and maybe Hutchinson are the only ones I worry could actually garner substantial Independent/moderate support by presenting themselves as a "non-insane Republican" and if Youngkin jumps in I fear he'd also be able to sell that image of himself.

Well, that's exactly what propelled him into the national spotlight in a 'no such thing as bad press' kind of way, with Fox propping him up as the next big thing and CNN writing piece after piece about how dangerous he'd be; otherwise no one would've paid attention to him. But like you said, if he was smart, he would've pivoted away from that once he stepped on the national stage in earnest and adopted the 'sane, reasonable alternative to Trump' veneer that myself and others feared the most.

Thankfully, he's quite the opposite of smart. At this point I think he's a true believer of years of Republican propaganda - someone who genuinely believes the 'silent majority' has been waiting for a white savior like him to rise up and lead them towards taking the country back. I doubt he has even an ounce of conniving political savvy, and just got lucky as hell that A) the majority of Floridian voters are, well, Floridians, and B) the pandemic handed him a golden opportunity to paint himself as a big man against those snooty libruls and their public health measures.

Actually, he's now claiming he's had sex. So now he's a devout Christian who spent most of his life remaining a virgin for his god and yet betrayed his god by sullying his pure body with premarital sex. If only Republican voters condemned instead of rewarded hypocrisy.

Some of the gay progressive pundits I listen to feel like he's just trying to hide a secret love life with men on the side, humorously mentioning how Lindsay Graham, who has had those accusations for years, is also from South Carolina and that it's odd to have two seemingly lifelong bachelors coming from the same state.

I dunno about that, I wouldn't wish Graham and Scott being a part of the gay community considering everything they're going through (and already having Santos to deal with), but then I also don't want them to be a part of the straight community, so what's the right thing to root for here.

And like I said in a different topic, DeSantis and the rest can't do shit to pounce on this - no matter how much they might lie awake at night dreaming about it - because to even have a chance of poaching support from Trump's base, they're forced to spinelessly toe the party line and support the 'political weaponization' narrative. I agree, though the polls in Florida have been very odd.

If I was a Florida Republican, I would be kind of pissed at Ron for treating Florida as his safety school. It wasn't a surprise obviously that he decided to run for president, but the classy thing to do would have been not to run for reelection in Florida if the White House was his immediate intention.
