I seriously dont understand this because a lot of people that can afford to go there are normal people with normal salaries IIRC?

doubt you need to be a finance bro, doctor, or lawyer to afford to go to Disneyland or Universal. Working class people can afford to go there too, no?

It's not too crazy expensive so if you're able to save up a couple hundred bucks a month for a year or two you can afford it.

Wife and I went for 5 days (3 days at Disney and 2 at Universal) and the total cost (round trip flights, hotels, uber/lyft, park tickets, and all the shit we bought while we were there) was like $3300

Yeah I figure with kids that are old enough to not get in free that'd be at least an extra 1500-2000 per kid so I can see how bigger families can easily shell out 10k+ on a trip there

To a poor nation they'd probably consider it privileged.
In America, not so much.

My understanding is that it's possible to visit relatively inexpensively, but once you add a nicer hotel, park food, the various passes to avoid lines etc., it quickly becomes quite expensive.

Yeah, we did a 2-3 day Disney trip at the end of our wedding trip, and the Disney part alone probably cost almost 5 grand. Hotel is expensive, plus genie pass, plus food and alcohol.

I would say if your family is doing a yearly Disney trip, you're probably pretty well off.

My partner and I went last fall and did the same thing. We've spent more on some vacations and less on others. It wasn't too bad, but that was also just two adults. We don't have kids. We also did it "barebones". We didn't pay extra for the line skip apps. We stayed at a cheap AirBnB nearby instead of a Universal of Disney resort. Apart from Epcot's world tour, we didn't eat meals at the parks. We only got stuck in one bad line per day (90+ minutes). We got to the parks when they opened and rode the rides with the longest waits first.

It can be an expensive trip if you're coming from somewhere else, but we used to do the annual premium passes for about $700 a person about 10 years ago for Disneyland/California Adventure. I used to live about 30 minutes from Disneyland, so we would go 2-3 times a week. Some days we would go after work just to have drinks at California Adventure.

Going to Disney as a big, infrequent vacation isn't privileged. But if you're able to afford annual passes for the whole family every year, then yeah that definitely comes from a place of privilege. Like, the annual pass now is $1,599 per person. That's not a low income price.

You're in the top 2% of people I would think if you can afford to do that. Most people don't go on any vacation at all, because rent + food is most of their money blown.

Hell man if your family unit (2 adults) makes over 6 figures TOGETHER you're actually doing pretty well. Many many places make minimum wage both parents or just a bit more.

They are, but if the only thing you are doing on your trip is going to the parks, it might be worth it. You save on parking/transportation/time. That gets baked into the price. Most of the parks give people who are staying at the park's resorts early entry into the parks too. When we went we did more than just the Disney parks, so we felt it wasn't worth it.

I don't know about Florida, but for California, all of the hotels surrounding the park cranked up their prices, so you have to pay a high price unless you want to stay miles away and drive over to the park (which means now you have to pay for parking).

Like a 2 star hotel that I've stayed at before is considered a budget hotel and their cheapest room is $229 a night now.

In my experience pricing is as such:

Park ticket: $100~ per day. Could be up to $130

Disney Resort per night: $130-$180

Food: $10-$15 per meal (quick casual meals, not restaurants)

Let's say $100 per person per day for the ticket, four to five person family.
So that's $400 to $500 a day.
Throw in $100~200 for a place to stay per night.
$50 a day per person on food/drink.. so $200 ~ 250 for each day's food.

So about $700~ 1k per day, not counting the souvenirs and travel expense (which I suppose will vary a lot depending on your starting location)?

Median home income in the US household (and again, this will change a lot depending on your location) is about $70K. Let's say you pay about 20% in taxes (just to keep math simple, ignoring various credits and whatnot). That's $14k in tax, so you have $56K to actually spend.

The 10% rule says you should spend under 10% of your income on entertainment.
So the median family has about $5~6K to spend per year (of course, this includes things like children's extracurricular activities/ sports and whatnot).

So, no I wouldn't necessary say the family is privileged, but its going to be a significant portion of their entertainment budget.

Your argument doesnt make any sense, if they put that money on a car down payment then theyd still be the same amount of broke just with a different car.

The real answer here is that it depends on how long it takes somebody to be able to afford the trip or how much if their yearly budget it is. Somebody who saves up all year to take their one vacation a year at Disney is obviously not privileged whereas somebody who can spare that cost every few months, for example, would be.
