I watched this documentary, and IIRC, the major angle that she went with to excuse herself for the lying was that her father sexually abused her multiple times as a child, her Mother did not stand up for her, and it put her in a position to lie about everything in her life to present a happy facade rather than expose how she was tortured due to the abuse. This bled into her everyday life going forward, including "pretending everything was ok" when her child went missing, lying to the cops, etc. The documentary presented some claims about some shadiness with her Dad around the time her child went missing, and I don't remember if they outright said he was involved in what happened, but it was definitely heavily implied. Its insane how many fathers are thrown under the bus when women commit heinous acts. It just so happens that many of the fathers are deceased and cant defend themselves. --- If you're not getting promoted, it's not because you're not good at your job.
