Ehh, I was never into The Dead back in the day because in my time they were wasting out...and then Gerry died. And yes I know about Pigpen.

I appreciate them more now though, including their old work.
But to go to a show in the 80's and early 90's just didn't feel right.
Plus I was into Rap at that point.

Not just a straight addition but more so a replacement. Many times this has happened over my life. for instance the first three Def Leppard albums are amazing and have a much different sound with guitarist Pete Willis. Once he left and Phil Collen took over they became a much different band from Hysteria on.

It's just like I enjoy Van Halen much more with David Lee Roth than with Sammy Hagar. There are tons of examples like this.

I wouldn't say I stopped liking a band. And long lived bands have had multiple members change throughout the time they're active. I have nothing against Hagar, he's a good musician who makes some fun songs. I just...don't quite like him as much as Roth. They still made some good music and albums with that line-up though.

I was admittedly less into RHCP's sound when Dave Navarro was in the band but that's nothing against him as an artist (he's easily my favorite part of Jane's Addiction), he was just VERY different from John and even Hillel, the latter of whom he was probably "closer" to stylistically. I didn't stop liking the band but it was my least favorite excursion of theirs, even though the album (One Hot Minute) is completely listenable. While I never felt that Josh Klinghopfer "fit" with the band, I think he was a much more on-brand replacement for John than Navarro was.

Although they peaked well before my time, I also share the opinion that Earth Wind & Fire was never the same group after Maurice White retired from performing. He just had a completely different and superior energy than Phillip Bailey.
