It has three things working against it:

This is your great-grandfather's idea of a sci-fi hero
With superheroes being pulled out of obscurity, I don't think it would be difficult to modernize an old hero that people might have heard of before.

Ming the Merciless is a dated, yet indespensible part of the story
I would suggest a diverse group of heroes versus a Vladir Putin stand-in who looks like Anton LeVay. That's really where the character has been since the 1950s. And since Emperor Ming has a sycophant King Kala working for him, that guy could easily be turned into Donald Trump.

If producers still think the name Ming the Merciless is too racist to ever work in the modern era, they could skip straight to the Queen of Mars storyline and make Queen Fria the villain instead.

George Lucas already strip-minded the story's content for Star Wars
Flash Gordon is similar to Star Wars in its setting, but it's actually more like Indiana Jones in its tone. There's also a Roman Gladiator motif going on with the villains that is nowhere to be found in Star Wars. I'm picturing a movie with fist fights, cliffhangers, an erupting volcano, and a battle or two with a giant monster. I think they could even have a swordfight and make it play out more like something out of a Kung Fu movie than a lightsaber dual.

It wouldn't be anything at all for a trailer to show us that, This is NOT Star Wars.

You ever read/see "John Carter of Mars?"

There's a fair bit of similarity because the paper that wanted to serialize the existing works by Edgar Rice Burroughs couldn't reach a deal, so they had their own guy come up with a knock off.

Buck Rogers was also an influence, being the impetus behind seeking out the John Carter serialization in the first place.

Stylistically, it's less James Bond and more like Indiana Jones...in Space.

He's nothing like James Bond.

In fact, James Bond tried to kill him because he was jealous of Flash's big Chad energy stealing his gf.

He's an American athlete who gets swept up to another world and becomes a hero against tyranny. He's much closer to Captain America than James Bond.

That space Captain character on Futurama I think is meant to be a parody of Flash Gordon. He wasn't a spy, he was a sci fi hero. Also there has been a modern reboot on syfy channel like around 12 years ago or so. I actually liked it but it only lasted 1 season

Why would you make Putin and Trump stand in villains? That's just a good way to horrifically date a movie.

Because, when he first appeared, Ming the Merciless looked like this:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/3/0/1/AAdlC_AAExP9.jpg

You can make him less of a stereotype and people will still write clickbait articles about how the racism of the 1934 comic strip is inseparable from any attempt to revive the IP. But if you have a diverse cast of heroes battling Trump and Putin, the film becomes far less likely to draw controversy from anyone on the left.

Besides, tying villains into current politics has always been a thing. In Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe, Ming dressed like Hirohito, ordered around a bunch of Germanic henchman, and had a heavyset Mussolini stand-in named Torch as his righthand man. There was also a character who referenced Ming's "dirty concentration camps."

People in the future might not get that King Kala's awkward handwaving when he talks is reminiscent of Donald Trump's mannerisms, and they might not see Ming's invasion of Earth as a parallel of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but they'll still see an evil dictator and a buffoonish puppet ruler who answers at his master's beck and call.

I don't think he has the range for it. It's just going to be a different Star Lord, and that's a very... dated kind of character. Like in that specific 80s-90s nostalgia window.

There's probably someone with the ability to not have that vibe, and give a long-lasting Flash for the coming generations.
