I was talking with this older guy, and these were his opinions about people cosplaying (sans professionally):

• Dressing up as a character, except for Halloween, is a sign of mental illness.
• Most people that cosplay believe in the multiverse, and they believe that in a different universe, they are that character. So they have to channel that energy to get to that universe, which makes them cosplay.

I was flabbergasted. I countered with a thought that most cosplayers do it as a hobby, that they find making their costumes fun. He double-downed on this, saying that their parents failed them if that's the case, because they never grew up.

Starting to troll, I asked about his thoughts on furries. He shared an anecdote that he was on a beach and saw a little boy running around in all fours and a tail. He said he was disgusted at how the boy's parents allowed it to happen and how the world is becoming fucked- apparently, in Europe, there's a story of a little girl that identified as a cat, and the school punished other kids for not correctly identifying this girl as a cat; the school apparently even provided litter boxes for the little girl to pee and poop in.

...where do people get these opinions?
