eh if its highly acclaimed or a genre fusion I can maybe see giving it a shot

Game designed for multiplayer, but only local

Genre I know I'm not a fan of, way too long to beat, and battle pass are usually the top 3 deal breakers for me.

Too long > Certain publisher > Battle pass

aside from the genre one that doesn't really fit the spirit of the question i'd have to go with less than a 75 on opencritic. not that those games can't be fun for a time but if i actually am going to spend money on a game it ought to be actually good

I wonder if many people actually avoided Sekiro due to it being published by Activision.

I voted the review score one. I play games with worse scores, especially if it's something I'm looking forward to, but that'll cut my interest in a game by a lot if it's something I just think will turn out to be a good game.

Definitely genre

After that: publisher/developer might stop me from buying a game, but I might still play it if I got it for free, while being too long won't stop me from buying the game but definitely makes me procrastinate on playing it. And if a multiplayer game is online multi only that's a complete deal breaker. So I guess one of those is my back up answer.

but upon some thought it might actually be genre? I mean I do play two gacha games which by their very nature require always online. I arbitrarily consider them different from everything else though and always online would absolutely tank other games for me even if it's hypocritical.

Honestly it might be Battle/Season Passes, although that just precludes buying it early. It gets too expensive. It's why I didn't get SF6 at launch despite being very interested because I can just wait a few years and get the Super/Ultra version with all the characters in the base game.

First thought was 'If it's 1st person perspective only'. I really wanted to play cyberpunk and I just couldn't because of that. So I guess genre I'm not a fan of?

Although after thinking about it a little it may be season/battle passes kind of. Games like Madden, FIFA, NBA2K, etc I will never touch despite being a massive sports fan because of how focused they are on the purchased loot boxes that are super predatory. Firm believer that if you buy a game it should be complete and they shouldn't be milking you for more cash unless it's adding substantial content (i.e. large scale DLC). Those type of loot boxes should come through playing the game not through spending cash

was gonna say genre but then I saw price and well price is certainly keeping me from getting a lot of games I would otherwise love to

"Way too long to beat"

I have no life. No family or girlfriend. And yet full time job + 1 hour driving per direction is enough to kill my free time. The only time I actually play is on weekends.
A year and a half ago I started doing a Assassin's Creed marathon. I finally beat Odyssey a few months ago. It took me 5 months.
It pretty much killed my interst in gaming. I am dead serious it was a traumatic experience and I don't want to go through something like this again.
I had to beat Valhalla too to complete my marathon but I just couldn't and I don't think I ever would.

I picked genre, but in hindsight there are some that have been fun to play. Always online can gtfo though.

Everyone has gone through this at some point, usually with an Assassin's Creed

For me it was Black Flag, which I legit enjoyed, but it still destroyed me

i already don't play games i'm interested in because i don't fuck with non-steam launchers

None of these on their own are dealbreakers for me even if there are plenty I don't like. Mandatory Online Connection is probably the worst with the caveat that we are talking about single player games. That being said, I will still play Hitman games if they keep this feature. Games being too long and no pause buttons would be the next two. 5-10 hours is the sweet spot for me, and I have skipped over games that I had interest in because of length.
