Growing up my parents always ordered one plain cheese and one pepperoni. I usually had one of each, but in my adult life, I don't remember the last time I had pizza with no kind of toppings.

Hell no. I want toppings. Unless I'm really hungry and there are no other options I will politely decline something as plain as a cheese only or single topping pizza. I'd rather have some microwaved chimichangas than a pizza that plain.

Yeah I like a plain pizza. Though as I've found in my travels, "plain" confuses people. People were confused in Amsterdam, people were confused in Colorado. Maybe it's just being from New York / New Jersey but I thought a plain pizza was a regular thing to say.

Apparently, people think that just means bread??

Back in Jersey I wouldn't get toppings because the pizza was excellent as is. On the subject of Italian pizza, people would always tell me they don't use toppings because of how high quality they are.

Now that I've lived in Italy for a bit, I can say that it's very unusual to get basic pizza. It's great, but nothing has brought me to consider it above the level of the best pizzas in Jersey.

Yeah which is why I said in my travels people don't get it. I was in CO for work last November and we ordered pizza (Papa Johns, ick) and I said I'm fine with plain. The guy ordering it was like "just to be clear, what do you mean?" and I said ah, a cheese pizza is fine. He thought I legit just meant baked bread.

In Amsterdam I was at a pizza place advertised as a New York pizzeria (it sure wasn't) and I asked for a plain slice and the guy looked at me like I had no head. After some back and forth I pointed and he was like oh a CHEESE slice. No, I want just bread.

Seems to just be a Jersey / NY thing. I just think of it as a cheese pizza being the absolute BASE of a pizza, so plain pizza would be the base line of a pizza.

Yeah this was a straight up shock for me as someone who's lived most of my life in the tristate area. Plain always meant bread, sauce, n' cheese. Though it's true in Puerto Rico too, which makes sense with the NY connection.
