My house is old and I have window units.

Just told my brother to turn his off and buy a fan because it's not even 80 degrees outside and it's even cooler in the house. He's forever leaving his AC on running up the bill.

It depends. My AC won't even go into that high power compressor mode manually.

Personally my AC doesn't go on until it gets to around 95 out. Any lower than that and my ceiling fans and open windows are good enough.

I think it's generally cheaper to have the AC running continuously.
Maybe the issue should be more about what temp the AC is set at?

Really depends on where you live. For AC in Jersey, I had it set to 68 and it was perfect temperature. In Florida, I can't have it lower than 76 because it gets too cold. In Jersey we had the heat in winter set to 72 and it was nice and toasty.

He pays rent but I'm in charge of the bills. If the electric bill goes up $100 more a month his rent stays the same. But that may have to change. I caught him asleep with a blanket on with the AC blasting and was like really?

Personally I'm comfortable up to about 84 degrees with a fan on.

That's the best sleep. When you're under the blanket but can feel the cold trying to work it's way in, it's great. I will say though that obviously it isn't the best use of an AC or the money you'll spend on cooling.

i turn mine on if my indoor temperature goes above 80. i can usually get away with not using it at all by opening all of the windows at night and letting the air cool down my house. i close all of the windows when i get up in the morning and it usually stays below 80. the A/C only kicks on if it's like 90 or above outside.

If the person running the AC is paying the power bill, I think 80F is when to turn it on. If the person running the AC is not paying the power bill then I think it should only be run for health reasons, so whatever temperature that is (95ish?)

Actually I think it's close to the opposite. I did some research and if you leave the house, it will save you money to put up the thermostat around 8F higher then you usually do and when you get back home set it back.

What do you mean what?

If youre paying to run the AC, then be comfortable. If youre not, then only run it to prevent heat related health issues. Whats not to understand?

75 is the perfect temperature. Though at night I like to lower it to around 72.

Wtf at everybody here saying they set it at 80-95.

Wtf? I live in Florida so maybe I just don't understand how the temperature works in other states. But that sounds aweful. Also, humidity in the house is horrible for your health, regardless of temperature.

Ill make exceptions if it is super muggy outside, and the humidity is getting really bad in my place.

AC is maybe 7% of my total power used during the summer. Kitchen takes up the top spot but I use the stove and oven a lot.
In comparison, electric heat accounts for over 59% of my electricity for the month, and that's with keeping the thermostat at 67 F.

I keep it cool in my house during the Summer. Early Spring (before all the gd pollen), the windows will be open, especially if it's cool and windy. Usually around 75-80, depending on the humidity outside.

Winter is the complete opposite. Your ass gets cold in my house, we got blankets for ya. Those mf windows are open or the heat is set to 68. I also have my 3090 and 12900k furnace you can warm yourself up by.

So does a dryer. In the time I've stayed with my family, my brother will everyday throw 1 or 2 pieces of clothing in the dryer to unwrinkle it before he goes to work. I do a load of laundry every 3 weeks. I guess thats because living by myself all those years you keep costs down. I had to pay for it. My brother doesn't really care because he doesn't pay the electric bill

Depends on the outdoor conditions. My place naturally gets REALLY hot inside anywhere above 80 degrees outside, so during the summer Ill usually set it around 78 f if Im home during the day, and run fans + open windows at night.

I also work from home and have indoor pets, so keeping it climate controlled is a higher priority for me than before when I was living solo and going to work on-site. And even then, sometimes just letting the air run rampant makes your pantry food go real bad real fast.
