I went to Ellis Island once for a school trip; got to see the skyline pre-9/11, and the Statue of Liberty.

Haven't visited there since, although I'd like to go again (and do a lot more stuff while I'm there).
Did you do the mock immigration activity?

I did not, sadly. I was visiting family for a wedding and it was only for a couple nights, pretty sure I had pizza the first night then whatever it was they had at the reception that 2nd night. It was a pretty fancy wedding so they had a bunch of food.

I'm about three hours north.

There is a saying in the horse world - Go Up The Hudson two hundred miles, turn left, and go back 200 years.

This town is/was a resort town for NYC and other places money back in the Victorian Era.
The Mansions were called Cottages. Though they are all amazing.

The Broadway in my town is the same strip of road that leads directly to Broadway in NYC.
They are both coincidently named that. If I were lost in NYC, I could hit Broadway, travel North, and go straight home.
Just as The Hudson River had no name for quite some time.

Having said all that, I have been to Boston more.

i was visiting as a kid in the 90s, so '16 was my first proper visit, well into my adult years. 95, 97, and 19 were largely spent in queens visiting family.

pros: great restaurants, lots of history and culture, no shortage of sights if you admire architecture and arts, lots of interesting hidden spots only known to locals.
cons: rather expensive, sea of concrete with not much greenery (outside central park anyway), very dense, lots of rats, smelly streets, stark poverty, and getting around town quickly means either subway or taxi (though this is the case in most megacities). this largely applies to manhattan though.

I miss a lot of things about the culture, nothing was ever boring. Also the food options there were honestly way more authentic than anywhere else I've been.

While I love driving for fun, it was kind of nice not having to in NYC. The subway system is pretty reliable and way cheaper than a monthly car note, insurance, gas, maintenance, etc.

I work in aeronautics for a defense contractor. I think they do have a presence in NY state, but I don't think they have anything directly in NYC.

Believe it or not Saab still has Facilities in Syracuse NY.
Not the car side, sadly, but the Aeronautics.

The Highline. It's free to roam on it. Abandoned above ground railroad that was restored as a park with art installations. K town for food and random shops. Midtown in general. Brooklyn Bridge. If you're looking to do an observatory then maybe consider Top of the Rock as you can see the Empire State Building from it. Central Park. Museums.

I would never want to live* there, though visiting is great. The diversity of cuisines is stellar.

First time I had authentic Szechuan cuisine was here.

It's really what made me jump into making my own, Szechuan chili oil and making Mapo Tofu. I should really revisit some of the other recipes such as the wontons drowning in chili oil were really good. Hot pot sounds good too.

Surprisingly yeah, I checked and my city has a higher crime rate, but since I've always lived in safe areas outside my city, any city is more dangerous. It's just surprising since I've never seen so many loons as on one day of walking around in NYC as I have my whole life in my own city. And yes, a mom had her daughter squat beside the sidewalk in broad daylight and piss. I didn't know where in NYC it was, and at first I couldn't believe what was happening. Besides that there were other loonies shouting and stuff.

But about hot pot, no I've never had dry hot pot. I've only even had normal hot pot once or twice sadly.. Would love to have more!
