All the famous stuff.

Turning 5 loaves and 2 fish into a feast, water into wine, healing menopause just by touching his robe (I mean seriously, not even him, just his clothes), rising from the dead, walking on water to calm the storm, curing blindness, pacifying dragons.

All that good shit.

I find it interesting that I've met a lot of Church going Christians who kinda get uncomfortable and roll their eyes when people bring up the miracles. Some flat out admitting they don't believe in that stuff, they just believe the teachings and others claiming they believe in the miracles but never showing the same zest they do with other parts of the religion.

I think that's somewhat facinating TBH, especially in todays age where believing in things just because someone says so is more topical than ever with Donald Trump, Jinping and the Tories.

Was it all a metaphor? Let us know.

Historical Jesus almost certainly existed, but he wasn't of divine origin, and he didn't have powers.

That's kinda flawed logic because a dude can still exist despite people making false claims about them.

People falsey claim John McCain set the USS Forrestal on fire and colaborated with the Vietnamese under torture and gave them so much information that he was nicknamed "Songbird"

That's a load of bullshit that didn't happen.

John McCain still existed and was a POW in Vietnam

The historicity of Jesus is not really in question.

But he was basically just a hippie who taught love your neighbor and pissed off all the religious and political leaders of the time until they killed him.

A person named Jesus that the fictional Christian Jesus was based off of may have existed. The Christian Jesus did not exist because he is an inherently magical being and magic does not exist.

He 100% existed or you have to throw out most other historical figures since they have less documentation of their existence. The scholars agree in this. Only the most fringe would try to deny the man didn't exist and why is probably some strange bias.

You don't have to be the slightest bit religious to accept that historical Jesus existed.

Accepting Muhammad existed doesn't make you a Muslim. Believing Buddha was an actual person doesn't make you a Buddhist.

Of course he did. To believe otherwise is to attribute coincidence to extraordinary facts. For instance, he was born on Christmas? Is that just a coincidence? One of the holiest days? He was resurrected on Easter! coincidence? And If he didn't die for all our sins, then how are we allowed to sin?

I'm also not convinced that Jesus ever existed. Generally people who say its not in dispute, never really show solid reason to think that.

The Roman texts mentioning him are not proof. Its like over a century after his lifetime, and its just Romans acknowledging that the religion exists. But that doesn't mean those Romans knew he existed.

It was like "oh yea, I heard some people called Christians are now worshipping some guy that I guess we executed or whatever "

But you never hear people deny that historical figures with far less evidence exist.

People put up a special kind of resistance to historical Jesus because they think It's a gateway drug to religion, or it will somehow render their atheism impure.

Which is absurd.

Good post. It's always struck me as more edgelord contrarianism than enlightenment or whatever the goal is, tbh. Simply a choice based on preference instead of any actual evidence.

People in the dark ages didn't even always realize other races exist. Many Europeans went their whole lives not seeing a non white person. They just drew what they knew. I can forgive people that long ago. But modern people thinking he would have been white have no excuse.

It is based on where they live. Hence why Jesus always takes the form of the nationality of where you are at rather than anything particularly concrete.

Roman critics of Christianity literally call him "magus", which is where we get the words "mage" and "magician" from. It's a derogatory term similar to "street magician", "carnival palm reader", or "snake oil salesman". People on the streets performing miracles were a dime a dozen in the ancient world. The Romans wouldn't even bat an eye about stories of Jesus raising the dead.

There are some near eastern pagan spells inscribed in exorcist bowls that call on a bunch of names of dieties and wise men. Jesus is called upon alongside Hermes, Thoth, King Solomon, and Hecate. Kind of shows how ancient people were loose with their beliefs. Even the Christians and Jews of the time believed Zeus and the Greek Pantheon existed at that time. They were merely lesser supernatural beings created by God who were not to be worshiped.

We do have contemporaries who have no clue he existed. We also have Paul who not once mentions Jesus being a dude, even when that would be a slam dunk for his argument. His Jesus is a divine being that tells him things, not formerly a dude.

That doesn't preclude there actually being a dude named Jesus, but it's pretty fuckin weird. The I'm on the side that says that the evidence suggests that Jesus was a divine being euhemarized into a dude later. But let's be clear, the evidence is Bad in either direction.
