As for what effect the protest had? I mainly scroll the front page and have notice a pretty huge drop in both post quality and quantity. It has rebounded slightly, but now you mainly see the same 7 subreddits constantly. It definitely feels like the traffic has slowed down as I could check reddit every couple of hours and the front page would be different.
