Vincent's OldSTATS number is 49.67% so he's gained nearly ten percent overall since the beginning of the New Era.

I didn't realize how well he had done prior to that boot; even more strange it took him this long to return since he's been a strong character for many years now.

It's a tough break being a solo act for an upper mid carder. They're always going to perform just well enough that no one really pities them enough to help push them the next contest, but never well enough that whoever supports them feels like they deserve.

the trick is to do it long enough that you get the shoe-rydia push

I'm pretty sure I'm well beyond Shoe.

The trick is to push other stuff and rotate like roulette so you dont go insane

and also because it can be fun

I feel like we're all in our 30ishes now, we're less assholish and everything is on the table.

I'd love to be proven wrong but he won't be getting better than that, so I got out. At least I can look at those stats and see exactly when I started participating and when I let him go, and be happy with those performances

I won't ever be able to bring myself to ignore Squall as long as he's in. Then I'll move on to another VIII character if there's any left, and then I'll just take my pick after that.

I've tried to do pet projects before (like the CRY year), but I always find myself going back to Squall.

And that is the reason why I don't think XVI is going to have much success next year. Everyone's just going to back their old favorites and XVI is going to suffer for it.

I'll make Clive or Cid a secondary in the lower half and I'd be glad to make a trade partnership for one of them in the top half

But this is my first year back in 5 years, so I had no particular character I wanted to latch onto and just wanted FFVIII in general to do well. I'll probably take a step back from the other VIII characters next year.

Well Squall isn't exactly an upper mid-carder

If you're primarily supporting a character that actually has strength on their own merit you can afford to play around with other priorities as much as you like and still have your favorite to fall back on. People will envy you for it, and possibly spite you for it sure. But at the end of the day certain characters typically do well for a reason.

The only issue arises when you get tunnel vision and refuse to let your 2nd, 3rd, or n?th priority go thinking your actual favorite will get by without you only for the SPICE to come bite you in the ass when your low card pet project or niche fave outlasts the character you actually prefer that also could've been a contender. We've seen it countless times before- twice in this contest alone even!

Just for the record, at no point did I ever actually prefer Cloud or Sephiroth over Cissnei ;)

Yeah now that there's some space from the release/playthrough hype, "XVI is the new XV" probably will check out. I could still see Cid being a dark horse if he's able to last long enough to pick up support when people's first (and second?) priorities start dropping though. Or Torgal, I just feel like I can't count out Torgal. But Clive going the way of Noctis does feel a bit in the cards, yeah.

I think the XVI crew will fare better than the XV crew. It's just a more popular game. Don't know if one will ever win though because we missed that hype window by starting the contest right before the game came out.

Never say never. People, myself included, said the same thing about Vivi and now look at him. The only two-time champion. Auron could've been the second but the "Lightning finally getting the win she was 'due' for" narrative trumped the "fresh off the boot boat to a repeat championship" one. I'm not saying it'll be easy to do, but it's not impossible. Apparently it's only a given that he'll never repeat if you actually believe that he won't.

Tidus also reached a magnificent height of 4th post-championship, but unlike with Auron, I had absolutely no delusions he had a real chance at another crown last time around. I just wanted him to reach 3rd to put a new top 10 notch in his champion belt, but alas it was never to be.

Maybe one day I'll try for another Balthier push, but I really think Yuna or Sephiroth has the better odds of my top 5 as they do not hold a crown at all. The point is have a little hope and you might be surprised!

I have very minimal control over whether or not Squall wins, and I certainly don't have the charisma of someone like Chris or FFD where people will help him win as a favor to me.

It's certainly not impossible for Squall to win again, but I wouldn't bet on it. I'll do my part though.

I wouldn't say never either. Eventually every strong character will have their run and we'll have to start double dipping.

Same, I guess we're a ways off from contest XXII, and I just remember being part of that Vincent run in XX but I didn't remember his XV-XIX showings being so consistent. Full credit to Koala (and others?) there.

But seeing the Vincent stats also gave me another idea I was kicking around, for a 3rd level of character contest attendance. If we have the top two levels which were captured in the graphic I put together & posted earlier in the contest:

(1) Every Contest Club

(2) "No Boot" club, or "been a part of every contest possible since first debuting in the contest" which is ECC members + characters who debuted at some point after Contest I and been in every contest since.

Then the third tier would be:

(3) "Been a part of every contest possible from their debut except when in a hardbooted state", so first thing that comes to mind are the ECC members who caught a hardboot before returning at the first opportunity like Kefka or Auron, or inevitably Yuffie next year...

Vincent would've fallen out of that 3rd level since he wasn't renominated back in last year (edit: forgot he was a soft boot so fell out in XXIII). Beatrix would fall out if she wasn't renominated in next year, and Kain Highwind fell out this year since he was just a soft boot last year but didn't re-enter this year, ditto Zell by being a XXIII soft boot and since retired. Wonder how many more characters fit this... I'll crunch the numbers on that for a future bonus stats day.

Seph finished 3rd in XVII, so he's been close before!

I know I've been giving you, MartinFF7, a hard time in particular for (needlessly stressing me out by) saving him at the last possible second, but as Leonhart mentioned before Vincent was never actually in your pyramid (scheme) to begin with so you were technically under no contractual obligation to save him whatsoever (even if not coming to his rescue in favor of Quistis and Cindy would've been a mockery of your GFAQs username). (I sure hope my sarcasm is coming through well in text, because poking fun at you is kind of hilarious and I'm going to continue to do so until SMFFFC XXV is over and possibly beyond)

Keeby you came in clutch at the end so many times as well. I don't even know your real opinions on Vincent, but I figure you must like him so you're aces in my books. I guess now that I'll be free up at the end I can repay the favors with characters you like more?

And finally Koala, thanks dude. Unless things have shifted for you I'm pretty sure Vincent is still your #1. He's my #5 of all time, and we've yet to actually fully commit to him together, but if 27th is any indication of what he can achieve even as a secondary priority then I would look forward to working with you again in the future (maybe not XXVI though) to see if he can reach a new PB. If I were you I would've had more faith in Tifa as well, but don't count out the best V.V. yet.

To anyone else who may have thrown him a save here and there that I missed. Thanks to you too.
