Clearly this isn't "of all time" when the oldest show on the list debuted the year I was born. I'm willing to believe this is the top 10 among millennials but it makes me wonder if they bothered including anyone over 40 in the survey.

Feels like this list exclusively polled 25 years old and under or something.

Anyway, not surprised its based on IMDB. The Office was not THAT big, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine definitely wasnt that big as much as I like it.

It was the biggest show on Netflix for multiple years in the late 2010s and during the pandemic.

The only one I havent watched all the way through is Ugly Betty and Simpsons (saw 11 seasons of it and bailed).

Okay obviously I should clarify:

The Office was very big but it wasnt bigger than Friends or older sitcoms like Cheers. Its last season was only drawing in 3-4 million viewers per episode with 5.7 million for the finale compared to an insane 93 million for Cheers (obviously pre-online). Of course it did extremely well on Netflix, but so did Friends. Im not saying The Office isnt huge, Im saying its not bigger than Friends.

notwithstanding that mooglekupo has helpfully pointed out what the data actually means, I would bet that The Office has well exceeded Friends in terms of post-airing and streaming popularity

Anecdotal evidence because i know tons of people whove rewatched The Office multiple times (and still do so) because its just top tier background TV while I know nobody who does this with friends

People definitely do this with Friends! Including on Netflix.

iirc the U.S. Ugly Betty was based on a telenova from... forget which country. If there were more international versions of Ugly Betty and you added together every single version of it then that could be top 10, sure. U.S. version only, refuse to believe it.

Rick and Morty also definitely seems off, but now I just realized are they defining "popular" as in actual eyeballs watching it, or like IMDB ratings? Obviously world of difference there.

Edit: ok IMDB ratings, fair enough.

I know numerous people who do that with Friends!

I am very tired so wont do a deep dive into the numbers, but in 2020 The Office was getting an average of about 12 million views per episode, which is huge, but by the end of its original run Friends was seeing 27 million views per episode on first run alone. Add to that that although The Office did outperform Friends on Netflix in the US, Friends was still the number 2 show, and I think if we look in the net The Office is not quite at Friendss level. A cursory glance also seems to indicate that The Office was bigger on Netflix in the US but Friends was bigger worldwide which is a reasonable view.

netflix made the office exponentially more popular than when it was running. Also i believe it being available to download onto ipod touches/iphones very early helped too.

oh yeah, I own the first three seasons of The Office on itunes

i never take advantage of it, but all that old stuff I bought still persists onto the AppleTV app today

i can watch the full six episodes of Andy Barker, PI anytime I desire on my phone

or the one random episode of The A-Team that I bought for some reason

I'm sorry but that isn't true for the UK. You simply cannot move without bumping into an episode of Friends on the TV, whereas I don't think I've ever seen even a clip of the office (either version). The longevity of friends far outweighs the Office in my view.

I understand why someone might think The Office competes with Friends in popularity. People talk more about The Office nowadays.

But The Office is a popular show people like. Friends, for all intents and purposes, was the biggest thing on American television for years this side of the NFL.

Friends is my favorite of those listed. I'd maybe vote for Community if it was on the poll but it's very close

Not exactly a fair comparison, as Friends was a little before online memes were, well, what they are today.

It would be pointless to poll Friends vs The Office today. Are you gonna poll The Office vs M.A.S.H? Because I can guarantee you Mash isn't gonna win that poll, but the idea that the former is more popular at any point is a joke.

The other thing is TV viewership has been constantly declining since the 90s

Nothing from the Office's era, and even less so today's era, can touch Friends in terms of significance because TV just doesn't matter as much.

M.A.S.H. would win my vote, and would probably win if it was a popularity poll of all Americans. But given the fact that my 65 year old mother isn't on imdb rating shows, it's not going to be on the list.
