I've been rocking a galaxy s9 but saying I'll upgrade "soon" for the last year. It's really starting to show its age, especially with how I've abused the battery. But it's still plenty good enough for now

Literally just updated like 2 weeks ago but purely because there was a great deal I was able to take advantage of by using a friends student discount. I got a the top model of the OnePlus 11 5G for $425.

Before that my phone was 2.5 years old and honestly nothing wrong with it other than the battery life was getting questionable. I could have definitely kept using it for probably at least another year unless the battery deteriorated a lot more.

4 years in on a Pixel3 and the battery is going.

I keep saying I'm going to upgrade soon but then something always goes wrong, ie the fuel pump in my car imploded two weeks ago, so at some point.

I've had a Galaxy S9+ (S9 with a larger screen) for a few years and the battery is still reasonably okay. But that may be in comparison to how my previous phone was.

I have the Galaxy S20 for 3.5 years now but it basically runs like new because I recently had its screen replaced for which included a battery swap.

Next time I swap I'll get one of the foldable ones. They look awesome.

I was thinking I had my newest phone for greater than one year, but now I remember it was less than one.

I had to get a new one, since the 4G signal on the previous phone was completely out of date, since it won't connect in anyway for a phone call, so, I was forced to get a 5G phone, since I didn't have a choice. There was nothing else wrong with my old phone, as it still allows texts and connecting with the internet with no issues.

Galaxy S10e for at least 3 years now. Maybe 4. Not sure exactly when I got it. It's kind of beat up at the moment with some minor cracks and battery life is eh. Charging port is kind of messed up and the cables come out pretty easily. Totally serviceable still but probably gonna upgrade soon.

Have a Galaxy S8+ that's basically falling apart. Loses 20% battery just sitting next to me while I sleep and has to be charged multiple times a day. Power cable also barely connects so that whole process is even more annoying. Sort of want to upgrade just to not have to deal with that but also I barely do anything with my phone besides use the browser and some extremely light apps so it feels like a bit of a waste for how much else that money could get me.

Really considering upgrading my phone this year since my phones screen gets unresponsive pretty easily, and supposedly the next iPhone will use USB-C to comply with European laws.

I have no idea. Whenever I dropped my last phone on the locker room floor and cracked the screen into itty bitty pieces. Do people really track these things that stringently. (Yes, they do. I've known people who upgrade their phone religiously the second their contract allows them to.)

Not sure if people have experience with them, but my dad has a folding phone. He likes it in most ways, but he dislikes how small the phone screen is when it's folded up, and of course, that's how he uses it a lot of the time when he's just casually pulling it out or whatever.

Isnt that, like, the whole point of the folding phone? Folds to fit in your pocket and for casual things, unfolds for more dedicated use.

Correct. But a lot of the use you get out of a phone is casual, so the sacrifice ends up more painful than people expect.

June 2020

LG V60 ThinQ

It was a top of the line phone at the time and there have been no issues with it running anything.
It still has one of the best audio setups I've heard for a mobile device with it's specialized dac/amp and has a headphone Jack.

Probably won't upgrade until I need too, there isn't any point. Wish LG didn't get out of the phone industry because it's a great phone.

I guess I don't know what type of foldable he has, but I've seen ones where folded, the outside screen is as big as a regular phone. In that instance, I wouldn't see a problem, as the huge unfolded screen is like a bonus.

Got my Moto G Power '20 in May 2021. Still works but it's starting to show signs of wear. I usually buy cheaper phones expecting two years out of them, since I use them a fair amount. Once it has a big issue (like half the screen going dead), that's when I replace it.

I voted 5-6 years since that's about how long I had my Pixel 2. Just finally replaced it with a Pixel 7

The only reason I upgraded was because the charging cable kept falling out and refused to stay in for some reason, and I heard about wireless charging and that sounded pretty cool. Changed my life. Other than that, I'd probably be using the Pixel 2 for years to come.

It has been an understanding in the back of my mind that many people upgrade phones every 1-2 years but that sounds nuts to me. It can't be true.

I'd read this when I had the problem and scraped the fuck outta in there but it had no effect. I thought for sure it was actually going to fix it when some crud came on out but it just never was satisfied to accept a charging cable again I guess.

I dont buy a phone very often, and its a pretty big purchase/kind of an effort, so its not hard to loosely remember when it happened last.

in this case its very easy because it was just like three months ago, and I saw GotG3 afterward

before that it had been like. Four years or something. I think it was the summer before the pandemic.

I remember I dropped it within like a month of buying it and had to go to Best Buy to get it fixed

Odd. That worked for both myself and a family member. Both using iPhones though, so maybe Lightning vs USB-C makes a difference (even though that seems weird...).

yeah, i basically agree with this. i've only had three smartphones so it's not really hard to remember why/when i got them. then there are the people who upgrade every two years so it should be easy to remember when the last time was, etc.
