A very good PC build with RTX 3060 Ti: ~$700

PS5 with 2 years of PS+ so you can have basic features PC gets for free: $660
After 5 years it's $900

Within that time, investing the savings of PC gaming will get you better upgrades in the future, for less than the cost of the next console, instead of being stuck in a ecosystem designed to siphon as much money as possible from you

A 3060 is all that's needed to beat a PS5

You don't need to trade in for a new GPU the instant a new one is released. Your old one will work just fine and still be more powerful than what you get with a console.

KBM is superior and costs barely anything and 80+ Gold is just fine. You also don't have to get those EXACT parts. This is just for listing the price.

Linux is also a pain to get many modern games running on. Under no circumstances would I recommend it to anyone who was actually considering a console.

I prefer KB/M for many games, but it does still close the price gap further. As the PS5 includes a controller, some sort of input device should be included for a fair comparison.

As for PSUs, anything 80+ gold is absolutely not automatically fine. There are absolutely PSUs out there that meet the standard but will take your PC out. Even some of the more reputable brands have put some stinkers out there. If there's any part you don't skimp on, it's the PSU.

Once you add in a copy of Windows, a cheap KB/M and a PSU that isn't a fire hazard, there's not that much of a price difference over time. You've effectively got a higher upfront cost vs paying more over time. Don't get me wrong, I think that's a positive on the PC side and I'd take a gaming PC over any console if I could only have one, but lets make an apples to apples comparison here.

Honestly, with what a person pays for a PC rig, compared to ( what used to have been) a typical console lifecycle, said PC would be a MUCH longer-term investment as whatever games that come out from the time you get a good gaming rig to several years down the line, it should and will run those games put out on whatever future console is released in that timeframe.

I've never heard of some of those brands. Silicon Power? Apevia? At bare bones I would expect the memory to cost around 50, and I'd spend at least another 100 for a reputable brand for graphics card.

Sure you can buy budget for pc parts, but at the end of the day, I'd rather spend a bit more to get something I know won't break down on me. Then again, I'm Canadian so our prices are all out of whack atm. A decent gaming computer is at least 1500, and reaches closer to 3k to be more modern.

It depends on where you shop, because a lot of brands overprice their computers by a wide margin, plus add all the fun taxes to that. My province charges 15 percent. So even a 1k computer is 1150 plus upsale.

Why do these comparisons always use the most expensive console option at RRP and compare it to cobbled together on sale PC parts? Shouldn't you be using the PS5 digital for comparison, seeing as the PC you've posted has no disc drive? Hell, the disc PS5 is on sale right now in the UK for 400. Or you could get an Xbox Series S for 200. And there's methods to get digital Xbox games for VERY cheap. PCs can't compare on price.

I don't buy consoles anywhere close to launch tho. Also I don't think I'd bother with PS Plus anymore even if I do get a PS5; it's been a long time since good games in the freebies were a consistent thing instead of once in a while, and I don't care about online multiplayer.

Adding a disc drive to a PC would be what, an extra $20? Basically negligible. Basically useless too; PC games don't really come in physical anymore (and I'm going to guess in the rare case they do, they're probably on USB sticks rather than discs now?), whereas on console, they still do.

To be fair, you don't really do physical games on PC anymore. You'd only get a disc drive if you wanted to watch physical movies. In contrast, physical media is still a major way of distributing console games and it'll limit what you can get on console.

TC isn't lying if you managed to snag some insane deals like the EVGA b stock drop a couple weeks ago where you could get a 3060 Ti for a literal $99, but those are extremely rare. I saw the partpicker link but what is missing is case fans, and with recent Intel chips and the power draw of the 3000 series Nvidia cards (and that case with a glass panel and using the stock cpu cooler) you're probably gonna have a furnace for a desktop. Add the shady PSU in that link that has terrible reviews and that's even more of a bad time

Also it's easy to find if you browse the right subreddits, but you can get Windows and Office activation keys pretty easily for free and it takes like 30 seconds each. I used to buy keys from shady sites for dirt cheap and usually got scammed out of a few dollars

But again, to be fair, all console games are available digitally. If we're going to make claims about building your own PC using parts found for cheap, or just using cheap crap, it's only fair to also use the cheaper console option.

And just look at the options being presented here: find parts all over the place to build a rig, looking for dubious activation keys online for the operating system, and all of this also overlooks the common problems associated with playing on PC: trouble-shooting software problems and drivers, or even having to deal with viruses, problems that don't exist on consoles.

At the end, this is always the big advantage of consoles, ease of use, and it's why PC gaming will never end consoles. If you want consoles to go away, you'll have to come up with something that is just as easy to use.

This is literally not a common problem anymore in 2023. Windows takes care of most driver installs. The only driver you really have to upgrade is the graphics driver such as Nvidia's drivers. The GeForce Now application makes this incredibly easy. It lets you know when an update is available, and you can just install it in less than 2 minutes. This is comparable to consoles having system updates (except the Nvidia driver update most likely isn't even needed).
