my thoughts when I wrote about it:

This game kinda disappointed me in every way, but still feels like it was well done? I feel like it has a lot of small things that are executed well that just make it feel nice to play for the most part, gameplay-wise, and there's some other neat stuff like every character having a unique style in battle, which you don't usually see in SRPGs with big casts. It also had a pretty good story that kept me interested the whole time. The system where you have votes to choose what you do in the story is great, and it's really neat how much variety in chapters there is. Makes the choices feel somewhat significant. From what I've seen, the game also has awesome replay value because of this, though I only played it once for reasons I will elaborate on. On the other hand, the important stuff in the game was not as good. First, the gameplay was never super interesting for me? I'm not sure if I'd feel the same about FFT playing it now (I liked FFT quite a bit back in the day), but I certainly liked the gameplay in this less than any FE game I've played (though I like the gameplay in those a fair amount). The main thing is that you don't play around counters nearly as much here. I like the counter system in FE a lot, so losing that is a shame.

Second, the cast is weak. There aren't many characters who suck (other than maybe one or two of the villains with nonsensical motivations), but there aren't any characters or relationships I care about either. They almost all feel like generic, ordinary people without any traits to latch onto. Perhaps because you can choose anything, the MC has almost zero personality. The rest of the cast isn't much better in that sense. No one feels unique at all. They're just... meh.

I did feel like the game got better as it went along - having more options in battles was nice, and the plot went some fun directions. But overall, it's the worst of the Asano games I've played.

It's really great as long as you can handle a lot of story between battles. There is especially a lot of story in the first few chapters. The battles are really fun and well-designed. I enjoyed the story and characters, but of course that's always gonna be subjective.

And in response to the previous post, I would say it's my favorite of the Asano games I've played (this plus all three Bravelies and Octopath 1).

Good not great. Definitely a must play if you like Final Fantasy Tactics / Tactics Ogre. It's biggest strength is the strategy itself. The actual maps are challenging, especially if you're like me and you go for a no-death run. There's no perma-death, so that was just a self-imposed challenge I put myself through.

As for the morality/branching story system, I wasn't a huge fan. It was so obtuse that getting the best ending on a single playthrough without a guide is extremely difficult if not impossible. I found myself suddenly locked out of an option through what seemed like no fault of my own, so I was forced to make a story decision I didn't want to make.

The story itself is pretty standard fantasy fare (some might say bland or even boring). I agree with the complaint that it's overwritten. It has some great moments but for the most part it's forgettable. The voice acting is notably bad. I blame Covid?

Maybe the most disappointing aspect of the game is the music, which is completely forgettable. I feel like if you're going to make a Tactics homage, you should try and get the music right.

7/10 because the gameplay is that good.
