If I were in the new husbands shoes, I think Id understand the situation and not feel betrayed. Especially considering that she wasnt actively trying to leave me and go back to him. It was a goodbye kiss.

Years ago the director or writer was asked that question at a QnA. He kinda chuckled and said it was a solar powered satellite phone and the audience started laughing. The video used to be on YouTube but I can't find it now.
