tbh the reboot sorely missed him - he's one of many reasons Saints Row 2 is still the best in the series

I guess this last update is all we're getting for the reboot. Damn. RIP to a company that gave me many hours of enjoyment (mostly in one game but still)

I don't understand why the SR reboot was so poorly received once the bugs were fixed. Yes, the launch was messy, but by the time I got it last November the game was pretty good and certainly better than SR3.

It was probably just a "failure to launch" that caused this. I'm sad that we won't be getting a sequel, which would have had to live up to the Saints Row 2 name and would've likely fixed everything that made the reboot's launch so messy.

Isn't the Saints Rows reboot part of the upcoming PS+ games lol

I actually am curious to try it to see if it's actually just mediocre and people were bitching about it for nothing (outside of launch tech issues)

I have no idea at which phase of making the new Saints Row that they thought it would be a hit. Just everything about it looked positively unappealing. The zoomer focus just alienated old fans and I don't even see zoomers thinking this looked good.

Just a collosal mis-management and I have no idea how they thought they would have a hit on their hands. Really sad that they closed down as a result.

There were a couple fun parts, like Boss killing that Marshall lawyer and Snickerdoodle clawing at him, but I do agree that the characters weren't fleshed out enough. And I care about the gameplay because that's what made SR2 so fun. That game had the right mix of crazy shit and serious moments, as well as a sandbox that had a lot to explore.

But do zoomers even want to play as zoomers in their games? Why not make a cast of characters that are timeless? The characters from the original series seemed pretty timeless and people can appreciate them to this day. Who would ever look back on the cast of the reboot series and think any of these characters had legs? Who would look back fondly at any of them?

I think claiming that SR3 didn't get a new fan base is disingenuous though. That game did nearly double the sales as the second game. It was a drastically different direction, for sure, but it still seemed to have an identity with longevity to it.

Yeah, SR3 was wildly more popular and overall beloved by people than SR3. I'm not implying that an indicator of quality, but that's just what happened. SR3 was HUGE when it came out. GB nearly came to blows that year about whether it or Skyrim was the best game of the year period (they got it wrong)!

Around here, SR3 was considered disappointing, since they put 90% of their focus into 10% of the game. The end result was a game with practically zero replay value and none of the soul that made SR2 so great. When you think about how great SR's cast was, you think about SR2. Johnny Gat at his best, the genesis of Shaundi and Pierce, and some actually competent bad guys.

The only reason SR3 sold so well was the hype train they went on, not because it was a good game. They MADE it look a lot better than it was, but the characters introduced that game were mostly as mediocre as those in the reboot. The villains in SR3 were especially weak, and the devs had other ideas that were downright insulting to the existing fans.

But part of why the characters became timeless is that we got at least three games with each of them. And, well, one of them was Johnny Gat, and SR3's treatment of him was so appalling that they had to retcon that.

Also I say that SR3 didn't get a new fanbase because SR4 sold really poorly. The SR2 fans didn't care to go back after SR3 disappointed them. The SR3 fans just moved on. So that's what I am getting at.

Where are you getting these sales numbers for Saints Row 4? All I can find is that they did 1 million the first week with no updates since, and they were very happy with the sales it had made as the only update.

I certainly played and loved SR4! Wasn't as good as SR3 but the powers stuff was dumb fun.

I only got into SR because of 3's insanity. I know people who love SR2 really love it, but the reasons I like SR3 aren't in it from what I can tell: total insanity.

It's obvious they wanted to break away from the Saints Row is a Grand Theft Auto knock off, and that's why they went that direction with the third game. And it was a great success. There isn't anything to suggest that it wasn't and there aren't any sales numbers of information to support a massive drop off for Saints Row 4.

That said, the sudden shift for the reboot is just one that will never make sense to me. They had this goofy franchise when it was at its peak and then they went back to when it was less popular and put a zoomer spin on it that was already exhausted, and it very obviously didn't have the charm of even the older Saints Row games, let alone the newer ones.

I'm hoping that this is a wake up call for this weird zoomer genre that only has an extremely niche interest, because this decision demolished the franchise.

They are not the only company to try and double down on the Zoomer appeal on a AAA game only to find out that Zoomers are only playing Fortnite and Among Us. Saints Row Reboot was basically their Forspoken.

The attitude at the SR3 board was one of disappointment, and I was active there for several months. You can't revise history, so don't try.

SR2 was the peak of the franchise; this is just a fact, though the sales numbers were in part due to the lack of ad spots (their ads were great, just not run enough). They wanted to go back to that, but tried to appeal to a younger audience. It made sense on paper; it's just that there's not a big enough audience. The people I've talked to enjoyed the reboot more than SR3 - SR3 was the kind of game you play once, because man is it boring on replays, and there's absolutely nothing to do outside of missions. Steelport is an atrocious sandbox with no character or soul.

Santo Ileso at least has some character to it, as you can differentiate the areas pretty easily. It just didn't go far enough establishing itself.

Saints Row 1 and 2 were brilliant. The 3rd one was good but that's where it started to get over the top silly and then the 4th one went completely overboard and looked awful. Shame really as they had something really good going in the early years that rivalled GTA.

Volition lost their touch years ago. I bought Agents of Mayhem at launch, but quickly discovered that it wasn't very good. I waited on Saints Row 2022 because of that, and lucky thing I did because of the reported technical issues. I'm not even sure if I want it for free next month.

I never visited the SR3 board, but it looks like most of us here in this topic on Board 8 (the only place that matters) enjoyed SR3 and its silliness. "Bounce just like my cheques did back in the day" is so catchy.

Man, a lot of them come out and I just completely forgot about them after seeing a trailer.

Off the top of my head though, Watch Dogs 2 is probably the originator of this and I think that might be why it was executed the best.

But you have recent stuff like Forspoken and Redfall which absolutely cratered. Was Watching Dogs Legion zoomer infused too? I never followed that one much despite my buddy having worked on it.
