So, I liked a lot. Didn't love some things.
Good-

• Casting is great. I quite like all the characters so far. Sanji and Ussop still haven't arrived yet though
• Fight Choreography was good. Idk why I thought they wouldn't do stuff like the Three Sword Style or Nami's bo-staff, but so far it's all true to form.
• Looks great. Costumes felt believable and look good in motion. Environments and stuff also look nice.

Bad/Messy-

• There was no mention of Axe Hand Morgan causing havoc on the island. He's just a goofy albeit violent Marine captain
• Koby is good, but we didn't actually see him join the Marines. Just says that he's going to.
• Nami and Zoro are on the ship, but unlike the Manga, Zoro hasn't officially joined the crew. Nami was introduced with Zoro at the same time, which means the impetus for Buggy's introduction is a map to the Grand Line, not his ship or his treasure. Feels a little forced, imo.

Overall though I'm pretty happy with it. The bar was on the floor, granted, but they still do a lot right.

I honestly didn't mind this that much. Like, in theory, I do, but the actual application seemed fine enough, since they're mainly just fighting him to escape, so it didn't really feel like it needed much more to it. I also think it might have felt a little heavy handed if they tried to push "Look how good these main characters are!" by pushing a super evil seeming dude right off the bat. It felt like they were going moreso for the... Misfits with a heart of gold kind of approach, and it worked well enough.

EDIT: It also may have made Koby's choice to stay and join the marines seem more "Wait, what" to casual audiences if the first big marine they fight is a blatantly evil dude.

It wasn't bad. Will probably keep watching.

This is a good point. Although they did touch on the whole "Good Pirates Bad Pirates=Good Marines and Bad Marines" thing so even if AHM was a total chudmuffin I don't doubt Koby's resolve either way.

If anything by biggest gripe is with Buggy's intro. I don't remember but I feel like Grand Line maps just aren't rare enough to be the onus for him setting sail. They did nail his chair scene though and for that I'm grateful.

Oh, I agree. I do think it works well how they did it, though, since they left it more... Questionable morals bad, instead of "AHM is a blatantly evil bastard" bad. I think the latter may have been a bit tougher to come to terms with.

Baratie in the manga was all about trying get a journal that described the grand line. I think a map would be on the level as well.

I feel like they're trying to do too much with Garp, I guess to give Coby something to do.

With Netflix's track record of God awful anime adaptions, I had very low expectations. Pleasantly surprised with how good it actually ended up being. Will have to watch the rest of the episodes this weekend

he was born in the US, but his parents are Japanese (his dad is Sonny Chiba)

So the eight eps they have right now cover the first 100 of the anime? ;p

The CG of his stretchiness is much less body horror than I thought it was going to be.
