One of the RPGs, perhaps? Dragon Quest 4 or maybe Mother?

Perhaps one of the sports games on a technicality where you have to complete something like 700+ seasons to get to the end credits

Oh! What about simulation and strategy games where the game could be endless? Well, for those we're gunna presume at least near optimal strategy... like someone new to speedrunning.

My vote would be for one of the games that have no ending, and which just keep getting harder as you go until they become impossible. Those would technically be infinitely long.

If you include the mandatory grinding you have to do to get past the final dungeon, it is probably Final Fantasy 3. But that is also a Famicom game, not NES.

Dragon Quest games were always pretty short for JRPGs, even 3 isn't as long as you think when you go back to it. Probably not even as long as the original Final Fantasy.

I used to think NES Bomberman was endless but apparently there's like 50 levels and you become a real boy at the end

If they progress to a point where it's technically impossible to continue, that would qualify as an ending, and as such they aren't infinitely long. Sure, you can replay the game at that point, but that's not really different at that point from replaying a game with a more defined ending.

speedruns of such games often end after one loop, or at arbitrary score breakpoints

off hand my first thought would be TMNT? but I'm sure there must be something else.

oh cool, I had heard that was on the NES but have never seen or played that version of it. the last time I played it on SNES I basically mastered it but couldn't figure out how to beat it. I could go anywhere in the world and do any mission, and I did, over and over and over again, and I had so much money it was no longer worth doing missions. not exactly sure what I'm supposed to do to actually win, or if maybe you have to wait until enough time passes or something (or maybe it's actually an unwinnable game?)

Don't the LoLo games have like a hundred levels each
