Right now is around the time that the downtime was happening too. In the middle of the match, the site slowed down a lot and was only barely usable for over an hour. This happened during a time period where Link was making a comeback.

Some questions to inspire discussion:

  1. Who did you vote for back in 2013?
  2. Who would you vote for now?
  3. Would Link have won if the downtime didn't happen?
  4. Are big rallies such as the Draven and Undertale rallies good for contests?

I have mixed feelings. While I'd love to see more participation, having an outside force with the numbers to unilaterally decide our contest sucks because we can't do anything about it to the point where even getting literal David Hayter to Tweet the match in support for Snake isn't enough. Plus 99% of those people don't stay, not even for the next match, so it's not a net positive for site traffic in the long run. With Draven in particular, the LoL Reddit was hypocritical about it, and were sore winners to boot, so screw them. Just go have the contest on your own site.

Voted for Shepard then and would vote for Shepard now, staying above 10% was the most impressive performance of the match

It's hard to say if Link could've won without the downtime. It feels like these "rallies" always have more votes they can pull out of somewhere.

But these type of rallies have always sucked. I don't care what other sites think about our contests.

*Rallies themselves aren't bad, the problem is when one is so massive that it can singlehandedly decide the entire contest. As stated, the vast majority of those voters don't even stick around for the next match much less participate on the actual site. Course the other issue is that a lot of the ralliers in these megarallies are so toxic that you wouldn't want them around anyway.

Draven (I was 100% on board with Draven beating Link after R1 and 2, but started to change my mind in the build to R3 because it just felt so cheap and once the downtime happened, fuck that)

I can't say yes with 100% certainty but it's always left a sour taste in my mouth. Even if it wouldn't have we were robbed of Link taking the lead back, which would have absolutely ruled even if they would have just summoned more people.

No. It absolutely ravaged the board. Another issue (far from the only issue) is we've never had multiple in the same contest. If there were multiple forces of that level of strength colliding, that might be fun to watch (once or twice - I wouldn't want it to be an every contest thing) for the insanity of it. Of course if you gave me a choice between 2+ huge rallies or 0 huge rallies, I'm picking 0 huge rallies. But 2+ huge but roughly equal rallies is better than just having 1.

LSD, which sucked, is what I think of first when I think of 2013, and I won the thing (sort of). Just a huge shame because the contest had so much going for it beyond that.

Not too sure on Link actually being able to win though.

I am not a fan of the rallies simply because there is no effective way to counteract them except with another rally and that one usually still loses

Yeah it's what gives me pause about the downtime in LSD. Melee came back, held the lead for 20 minutes, then UT had a lead of over 1500 within an hour.

And it was more a counter rally anyway. Not really what I'm talking about.

Just a few notes before we get going. For those playing the home game, I took something like a two month break between writing round 2's bonus poll and starting this writeup. I've played a lot of League since then, so people hoping for me to be 100% biased in Link's favor and against Draven are going to be disappointed. As pure characters, Draven is awesome and is vastly better than Link. Both pale in comparison to Shepard, but hey! The other thing to remember is that my tone might not be as fluid or as related to past writeups as in contests past. There were simply too many matches to burn through all at once, and I got burned out.

Still true btw. Draven is charismatic as fuck.

@ctesjbuvf I try not to ask for much, but if you remember this match I'd love a guest writeup from you.

That sounds fun. I'm up for it.

Yeah, this is how I felt when the 20th anniversary of Mario vs. Crono II was brought up. That felt accurate. 10 years since LSD feels like a lot.
