Keep em inside until they are adjusted to the house itself . Never really dealt with adjusting cats myself but I noticed my mom always did that.

I've never done it.
But expect your cat to be stressed.
Just give him or her its space to realize this is home now.
Remember how territorial cats are.

Kitty will make it, and soon it will be the new Castle.

Limit them to a single room at first, let them get used to it, and then slowly expand from there

This. Make them a closed, comfortable room with their litter and some familiar objects/furniture and don't expect much from them for a few days. Let them build some curiosity about the other side of the door on their own.

The food here is terrible. My steak was so tough it attacked my coffee and the coffee was too weak to defend itself.

i feel like locking him a room will be worse. It's a 2 bedroom townhouse so there's honestly not much space outside the living room kitchen and dining area

Oh, no, I meant, let him wander.
Though I would expect a lot of hiding at first.

Dont lock your cat in a room. Cats are smart. They also want to explore. Just make sure he knows where the litterbox is and kitty will feel at home in no time.

This ,like pick up the cat and bring them to the litter box, they can work their way back from there

You just put them in the room with the litter box for a few hours then let them out.
