There's a lot of setting shown to you that builds, and through the second season you start having character plotlines start to develop. Season 3 is really where there's more of an ongoing plot, and as the series progresses it gets heavier. But there are still random fun episodes fairly frequently throughout. If you really dislike it you probably won't like it even when the plot is heavier, and should drop it. If you're at least mildly entertained but just want it to be going somewhere, I'd recommend you play it in the background. If you're doing something else to stay entertained and half pay attention you can still pick up on world building and chuckle at some funny jokes. By season 4 you'll probably like it enough to just watch. They're not long seasons --- My sister's dog bit a hole in my Super Mario Land cartridge.
