I don't hate sports. But I don't like playing them and I find them extremely boring to watch. I understand the rules to most major US sports, so I could follow along, but I don't want to watch/participate in them if I don't have to.

I was an Uber nerd when I was a kid, and playing football, running track and doing powerlifting really introduced me to a massive friend group that I never had before, it was great. I still mostly hung out with my nerd friends because I didn't want to talk about football any more after practicing for hours every day, but just getting to know people I thought were too cool for me really upped my confidence in social situations.

I still love sports, just don't play much anymore and tend to just lift weights and run. Last year though me and my buddies toured AT&T stadium before a cowboys game and I did tweak my back throwing the ball around on the field lol. Like idiots we just kept moving back to throw farther and like an idiot I was just chucking it with zero form.

i underestimated them, dude. they didn't look that athletic on the TV. well mainly the heavyweights but maybe cuz they just look like they move slower because of their larger size

i just attribute explosiveness w/ athleticism i didn't know about things like endurance and stamina being apart of it wtf

Even then, you can be explosive and fat as fuck. The most explosive man on the planet is this guy.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/9/8/3/AADfCWAAE0lv.jpg

Explosiveness comes from your ability to generate as much force as possible as quickly as possible. With that in mind, the biggest fattest strongest athletes tend to have the most explosiveness. It's just that you wont see them vertical jumping 2 metres because they are heavy. But the guy in that picture is so explosive that he can toss nearly 600lbs over his head like a paperweight.

Combat sports and strongman require a high level of conditioning to be able to carry out the work over time without getting gassed out. I.e. if your cardio is the limiting factor then you will fail because of cardio, not because you weren't strong enough.

There are many instances in combat and Strongman where the strongest guys and the heaviest punchers lost out because they couldn't keep up the pace as the competition went on. Most famously George Foreman vs Muhammed Ali.

When it's important to be able to punch and skip about continuously for 3 minutes at a time for as many as 10 or 20 rounds, you need to have a very high level of conditioning.

Honestly, try punching a bag for 3 minutes and you'll see the problem. It's hugely taxing.

30 years ago it made sense. If you weren't athletic there wasn't much for you in sports.

But today analytics is so intertwined in sports, if you have interest in math or numbers at all there's a good chance you'll be interested in sports.
You're a huge sports fan? So what if others aren't?

Ahh ok thanks for the info. I didn't think about their size being a huge detriment to their movement tbh lol. Just thought they lacked fast twitch muscles but I guess if they can throw massive weights over their head they would be springy af if they were in a place with lower gravity (adjusted so they weighed as much as an average track n field guy). Omg

Anyway my gas tank is terrible right now so i'd probably couldn't punch a bag for 3 mins straight

Mass moves mass, basically. That guy in the picture is probably about as pure fast twitch as you can get. But in order to move as much weight as possible, he bulked up as much as reasonable (which you can do in the super heavyweight classes).

Being fat is obviously a detriment to conditioning. It's all just a balancing act with whatever is important in your sport. That guy in the picture only has to move a weight one time in competition, so his conditioning is only relevant insofar as it allows him to train more.

For combat sports, a superheavyweight fighter has to weigh up whether it's more important to be physically intimidating and hit hard, vs his ability to stay on his feet and not gas out. But if you want a good example of what a fighter who is fat and still insanely conditioned, go look up a highlight reel of Fedor Emelianenko.

I do however find it funny when people ask why I "waste my time watching Twitch streams and YouTube gameplay videos instead of playing the game myself" and then turn around and put on a football game

Why aren't you out there playing football yourself, Chad

This is a pretty ignorant take. You need a football field, 22 people give or take, to play football. That's hard to set up. Same with baseball and hockey.

The only team sport that your take might apply to is basketball. But then you have to consider whether the person can still play (I can't).

I tried to get into football (American) recently to try and have some more small talk material. I enjoy watching the games, but theres more advertisement breaks than actual game so I lost interest.

Same thing happened to modern e-sports tbh.

You can play football with a few people and a couple of things to use as goalposts. Back in Primary School we'd just use our jackets. I don't look football, but there's a reason it's so popular: The barrier to entry is insanely low.
