So corporations can drip feed products for us stupid people so they can sell things like 1200 iPhones every 9 months?

If anything, it's the opposite.

Early adopters are buying those $1500 phones within a year of the last one, subsidizing the rest of us getting that same tech for $250 somewhat later.

Technology is mostly held back by politicians taking bribes to stifle progress because certain industries like the status quo.

See: Nuclear, cloning, drugs, alternative fuel, and education

I'm pretty sure NIMBYs and irrational panic have a hell of a lot more to do with that than ineffectual politicians.
Best they can do is monger the fear that's already there.

I don't think it really works like that.

More money is made from being on the bleeding edge of the future. The thing that's actually slowing us down is more to do with regulation and red tape than some sort of technological repression.

I assure you NIMBYs are not the reason human cloning research & stem cell research has been so heavily restricted in America while Koreans are passing us by light-years. They're not the reason you have to pay $250 for a math textbook like calculus has somehow changed in the last 100 years. They're not the reason fossil fuels keep getting kickbacks while solar and hydrogen are struggling.

Lobbyists are paying to keep it that way.

Calculus textbooks wouldn't be $250 if they weren't required.

You want to level the playing field, then stop subsidizing anything.
It's not so much lobbyists and politicians holding things back, but deciding who gets to be king.

Lobbyists and politicians control what gets passed into law and who gets funding. Not the average peasant like you or I.

So, fund nothing.

Stop throwing money at Exxon, and maybe hydrogen cars will be viable. Or they aren't, but at least there wasn't a thumb on the scale the whole time.

Of the government funds nothing then it has to come from private investors and they will always throw their money behind safe, proven technology.

Then, why are we throwing public money at that?

I saw something last night about how the reason we have little innovation in vehicles is because Congress passed some bill in 2011 that basically encouraged automakers to just make insanely large vehicles, instead of smaller ones, despite smaller ones being the goal of the bill.

AI would probably never reach its full potential because it has to be censored or gimped because of people asking or teaching them clearly offensive crap and offending people.

Oh yes.

tl;dr
Congress: "Okay, we're tightening the standards for passenger cars, but not bigass trucks because that would cripple their legitimate uses."
Automakers: "So you're saying we should just make bigass trucks, and bullshit the legitimacy of their use?"

Because if we didn't then we'd never make progress on anything otherwise.
