As you probably all know, Vivian, in the Japanese translation of TTYD, is... complicated. Back then, the game frequently would say she was a man "who thought she was a girl" but would still call her a man. In Japan's eyes, she is a male, although nowadays that would be heavily controversial.

In America, she is always firmly stated to be a woman, no hints of her being a transwoman, but also nothing saying she couldn't be. America just removed all traces of that.

From what I hear, the Italian version makes it clear she is a transwoman, and as such, she is a woman.

I don't really expect America to change this up, but I do think the Japanese translation of the game might feel compelled to rewrite the dialogue (I hear Nintendo is one of the more LGBT-friendly companies in Japan to work for as well) considering the subject matter. I'm just curious if they will try to scrub any traces and make it more in line with the English translation.

I doubt it, mainly because I'm not sure if Nintendo wants to include transphobic bullying in one of their games.

Well, that's what I mean. It would be one thing if the bad guys were the transphobes (not that a company like Nintendo would even want to involve themselves in such matters), but even the original Japanese narration and Goombella weren't exactly making the most positive remarks towards Vivian, stating her as a man.

So I'm just wondering if Nintendo is going to scrub that, and say she's a cisgender woman, or if they will rewrite as her being trans but remove the transphobic comments.

Im thinking it will be a 1:1 translation on the GCN version in this respect.

Maybe; to be honest, I don't know how much flak they would get in Japan for doing it, or if Japan won't overall care too much. The English translation is pretty safe, though, so nothing really has to be changed with that one anyways.

I'm pretty sure Goombella and the Japanese description of Vivian also says she's a "male." Goombella calls her one of the sisters by the end, but it takes a bit of time and from what I understand, it's still her being shaky about it too.

Never played TTYD, but this will be interesting in how they handle this. I remember Nintendo banned a custom Smash stage that said "trans right" or something along those lines, but that was years ago. Nintendo has been censoring less of their Japanese stuff, so this would be a good case study to see how Modern Nintendo handles localization like this.

Yeah, I don't speak Japanese, so I have to just go by what the translation says they say, but the descriptions, Goombella, and other characters outside of the Shadow Trio call her a boy and use male pronouns in the original Japanese.

I'm not denying. I'm just wondering if Nintendo will try denying it or if they will clean up their original dialogue to not be as transphobic.

This is only because of localization fuck ups. Bridget never had that issue. Her dialogue translation was always accurate.
