Nowadays, angry reviewers of video games are considered a major cringe.

Meanwhile, angry sports commentators and journalists are much more common. Your local sports radio show probably has hosts who get angry all the time along with the people who call into the show (if the shows still have call ins, a lot stopped them because of pranks).

One old angry video game reviewer, UrinatingTree, eventually switched over to being an angry sports reviewer because it was much more profitable and "respectable".

It makes me wonder why angry reviewers are laughed out of the video game community but angry reviewers thrive in sports communities.

You just never lived in the right sports market for that.

Boston, Phildelphia, Oakland (back in the day) were known for this.

I think it makes a lot of sense that angry reviewers thrive in sports. When "watching professional sports" is your hobby, you have literally no physical impact on the outcome of anything you engage with. All that's there for you is your emotional interaction: excitement when your team is winning and anger or sorrow when your team is losing. Most sports have leagues and tournaments such that there can be few or 1 "big winner" for the year, which means there's gonna be way more anger and disappointment in the sum emotional output of sports fans than other emotions.

Things will never be as good as the peak of the angry reviewer era.

I mean Angry Joe is still doing rants.

Angry Joe's rants work because when a game is actually good he doesn't do the "angry gamer" routine.
Also they work because Other Joe carries that channel in my opinion. That dude is hilarious.

The financial success or failure of a video can be significantly impacted by criticism. Whereas sports talk is generally talking about stuff customers can see for themselves.

There are some teams, owners, etc. who are thin skinned and respond poorly to criticism, but movies and video game critics are generally going to have more corporate pressure towards positivity.

Modern angry game reviewers are no longer doing it as a bit and tend to be angry because a game has female characters, the female characters aren't dressed enough like hookers and/or act like a man's equal or better, or there are minorities present in a game in prominent, non-villain roles

I think that's the difference

People who bitch about video game reviews are more cringe tbh.
