I'm going through something right now and I got to thinking about this for myself. I'm not even sure what mine are honestly, and I'm kind of afraid to play anything right now because I don't want to forever associate any particular game with this period of my life, or vice versa. But that's somewhat of an issue because gaming is my primary means of "escape" so-to-speak...

Anyway, I was curious if anyone else has games that they like to play for this reason, and what they might be.

I like to play games that are fun without being too hard (hard just adds more stress). So

  • Mario games
  • Sonic games
  • Sim Builders like Tropico and Cities Skylines or Let's School
  • Arcade Racing games like Forza Horizon, Need For Speed or The Crew
  • Action JRPG's like Ys 8, Tales of Vesperia or Ni No Kuni 2
  • Bloons Tower Defense games

There's a ton of options. Just have to find your comfort zone

I've had that happen. I dropped one of my favorite games like a rock and I still haven't gone back because any time I feel like it, I get sidetracked and end up thinking about why I dropped it instead.

My suggestion would be play something dumb with gameplay that's designed to be played for a long time. You want something that makes you randomly think about it after you've stopped playing and laugh at it. Not a game that's actively trying to be funny, but something that just seems to spawn a lot of in-jokes for people.
I would have suggested Payday 2 in a heartbeat because of what a chaos simulator it was but they're kicking it to the curb and bringing in Payday 3 which looks like a terrible replacement.
