I looked up indie games like super meat boy and hollow knight

seems like they made enough money to pay the few cents per download

idk who this is really going to affect besides ppl that don't wanna pay

I've looked up the most popular indie games made with unity and paying 230k from the 23mil they made doesnt seem that bad.

It's a fruitless endeavor because out of all things, Unity broke trust amongst its userbase. Before this new change, their terms of use had a clause that stated that if users do not like any new terms that are brought up, they are free to disagree and keep using Unity with the caveat that they do not update the engine they're using. Now suddenly, that clause is no longer there and they never said a word about it. With the knowledge that they can just retroactively change stuff like that without warning means worlds more than a (still stupid) fee per install.

Did someone forget that changing their TOS after the fact is only supposed to effect gamers who CAN'T afford to actually challenge it in court? Good luck trying to shake down those companies I guess.

I really hope Unity icarus's into the sun over this

I just don't get it. Like how ppl were mad at blizzard for Overwatch loot boxes and now they got rid of them and are just charging 20 bucks a skin. I miss loot boxes you could get 3 a week for free. Was that no enough?

They can't. It's not legal to change a contract and then try to extort additional charges.

Do keep in mind that most money spent on just about every consistently successful product is marketing fees. Iron Horse Games CEO (who I believe is the marketing lead for Kongregate. He's another money hungry guy)

I think it's more likely that they simply won't pay and tell Unity to go to court if they want the money. Then Unity will back down because some tiny ass shit company like them doesn't have a chance in hell of winning / even if they do win it'll cost more money than they get from winning.

Apparently they "leaked" a document saying the install fees were capped at 4% of revenue. They're obviously testing the waters to see how much bullshit they can get away with.

That still doesn't really address some of the biggest concerns. Like, if an indie game studio puts their title into a humble bundle, or if they give it away, is that 4% of the sales while it was at that price point, or is it 4% of overall revenue for the year? Similarly, what does 4% revenue look like if you're trying to charge a game pass for installs?

They said charity installs wouldn't count. How can they tell the difference? According to their website they guess. What does 4% look like for game pass? Officially, they guess. How do they even know how much money you made? You guessed it, they guess.

The 4% thing isn't even official by the way.

Basic PR avoids all problems, once again.

Just make this a thing going forward, call it prospective in giving support to smaller developers that would normally be reserved for established developers and using a sliding scale to allow this.

You can be greedy or stupid, those are both fine and dandy on their own, but you can't do both at the same time.
